I have entered my 15.1hh ID X into the Small Hunter Class at a local show. It's a first for both of us and very new to me so after just some general advice on turnout etc! There is a ride judge. I'm not expecting much for our first show, but it will be an experience :-)

Ratcatcher. Make sure your irons/leathers are big enough in case the ride judge is male. Make sure the horse is used to strangers getting on board. Make sure you horse will willingly, leave the line up and is as well schooled as you can manage.

No overlapping numnahs, plain bridle, no bling, chunky noseband. Gloves and cane for you, spurs (plain). Enjoy yourself.

Plain tack - no blingy browband. Preferably flat nose & browband - and double bridle if you have one! If not get your hands on a rugby pelhem but make sure you use a slip head.

Make sure numnah matches saddle & is subtle.. I use a cob sized numnah when showing my horse so its as discrete as possible.

For yourself Tweed Jacket, fawn jods, shirt & tie, long black boots, show cane & gloves.

Yes there should be a ride judge & you will most likely be required to strip horse & do a trot up ( work on this at home, Ive been at too many shows where its obvious it hasn't been practiced & it has reflected in overall placings )

& good luck

Thanks for all the help, should I wear I tie? I was going to use a Pelham and double reins. I don't think I will have a problem in the line up etc he's a very patient horse which is reflected when we are out hunting. Our schooling isn't completely up to scratch but will work our hardest up until the day haha! He's a very handsome boy but don't think the package is all the for showing, however it's I'm looking at it as a bit of fun and experience for us both

Good for you!! Make sure you get a slipead if using a pelham, looks more polished & PLEASE practice your trotting up in hand before show day:)

Looking forward to your report

Only use a sliphead with a Rugby/ show pelham not with a simple fixed ring one.

Ok will practice our trotting up also! I'm so nervous to be honest but I'm sure he will be fab for me, fingers crossed! Need to get all my equipment together and get sorted

Remember to turn him away from you, not pull him on top of you, loose his head and run, nice stand up in front of the judge so all limbs can be seen. To get him to stretch his top line as he stand up, put a few mints in a tic tac box in your pocket and discreet rattle it at the appropriate moment, never known to fail !! even at HOYs.

No need to be nervous, it's just a bit of fun. The only time you need to doubt yourself is if you think the horse will dump the judge, that is a big no no. If it goes pear shaped with you on, just ask the steward for permission to leave.

Thats a great idea re tic tac box!! Going to steel that Idea myself:)
