I go down to the field this morning and take my boy into his stable for breakfast and what do I see.

A relatively deep, long cut on his hindquarters. Not awful enough to warrant a vet call, and I don't think it's too painful for him on it's own.
He had a mild hissy fit when I first cleaned it and put a light spraying of Antiseptic on it. Left that to dry whilst I timed mum's lunge-work for her, then went back and put some wound powder on it so the flies couldn't get to it. He had another hissy fit about that as well.

I reckon what's caused it is the stupid brambles that our stupid yard owner doesn't want cut back beause she wants to field to be 'natural'. Urgh. We're gonna show her what's happened and basically demand that we be allowed to cut them back now.

But, I swear he's going to be the most wound-covered horse at the show. It's only a small local show, and I'm only going in for the Novice class (never been to a show myself), but still.
He's got this new one. Another superficial version of the same thing on his side that he got yesterday evening. Plus some healing bite and kick mark (again nothing too bad) from the young TB he shares his field with.

Last time I asked my riding instructor she said that the judges shouldn't mind too much about 'cosmetic wounds' like what these are. Seeing as she does judging at this show (for different classes), I hope she knows what she's talking about.
What do you reckon? Will it make too much of a difference if he does everything else perfectly?

(Apologies for the rant :o)

depends exactly what class you go for - in some classes they have to be blemish free (holding my breath for my very boisterous dominant filly not to get a mark on her) and others they turn a blind eye to (other fillies who like to be horses and run and play !!)

go and enjoy yourself - let us know how you get on xx

My horse did something similar one year above her hock. She scraped it on something and it was an inch or so wide by a couple of inches long. It was only hair that had been scraped off and the pink skin was in tact but it didn't look great. Thankfully a couple of puffs of black wound powder made it look less obvious. I did mention it to the judge though and she laughed saying 'they will do anything to try and get out of work'. We came 2nd.

Thats horses for you!!!! I had planned to go to out first big show a couple of months ago and had been up at the yard til stupid oclock the previous evening plaiting /washing/trimming/cleaning tack etc etc etc.....went to the yard to get ready at 6 am the morning of the show and my horse was absolutley crippled (bearing in mind shes never had a days lameness!!) . Vet came out and found she had an abscess!!! poor girl, i didnt mind about the show really as i just wanted her to be ok but i cant say i wasnt a bit gutted seeing all my yard mates getting their horses loaded and going away! :(

Hope your horse is ok, i would just go along anyway - im sure you will still be in with a chance. At the end of the day we are all horse people and the the judges should understand that thats just the way of horses! good luck;)

Thanks everyone for the replies :p

Well, we're definately still going and we'll just have a bit of fun there. It's more for experience than anything else.

Though, for the last couple of schooling sessions he's decided to start throwing his head up when going through transitions. His head carriage goes back to normal after the transition has been done, but still a bit worrying. He may just be being cheeky, especially as we got a few transitions done really nicely.

His back is fine, but he is due for a visit from the dentist, so as soon as the show is over I'll get in touch with our dentist. He's still eating/drinking completely fine, which is a plus in my mind. He seems to keep his head held better with more contact as well, so I have to keep that in mind when we do the show.

Ah well, seems he knew the show was coming up and thought of anything he could do to make things difficult
