So, tonight I sat on my 3 yo for the first time. It was a little impromtu and I apologise for the picture quality (need to teach my dad to use my camera phone better, it looks rather dark and gloomy!!). Still, I sat on him and he didn't care. Before anyone says anything though I will highlight all that is wrong with these pics - was in my work clothes, only trainers on my feet, yes that IS a pile of milk crates used as a mounting block and yes we are just on our concrete yard. Hey though, I am wearing a hat! ;)

Getting on (I have had a saddle on him before and was leaning across him first but just thought I'd go for it)

A reassurring pat ( he was more interested in whether he was going to get food)

I am going to have another go and walk a couple of steps - I may even put proper riding wear on next time! Oh, and definitely need better pics. I just thought I'd share my little moment as I have had him since he was 15 mths and it's quite weird to actually now being able to sit on him! :)

Oh congratulations! He looks fab!
I too got on my skewbald for the first time last week, on the concrete yard as we have no school, but he was a gem, now got a couple of orchard walks under his belt, so pleased! And very pleased for you two!

Cheers - I actually thought he may react a little more to me actually getting on as I think that's the oddest bit for them when you suddenly go out of sight and are aboard! He walked a coople of steps and didn't seem to care in the slightest. He was very pleased with himself after when i turned him out though and had a bit of a hooley across the field. I think he likes when he gets to do 'grown up horse' stuff. He loves the attention.

Well, the horse doesn't know the correct BHS way to do things at least! I can fully attest that all he was bothered about was whether the treat supply would run out. OP you didn't mention the 3 dogs running loose either ;)

Might even get the handler to wear a hat next time....?

Lovely! I am planning on sitting on my 3yo towards the end of September although I will probably be the same as you and one day I will just get on. Think I might wear a bp though just in case

Congratulations, you must be so chuffed.

Impromptue is normaly the best way to go about it ;) No stress or worry. I was once, bringing in from the field, a 4yr old welsh I had in to break. The field was miles away from the yard, I had my hat on as I had just ridden another pony. I couldn't be bothered to walk back so I made reins out of the leadrope Popped on him from the fence and rode him in from the field. He was a super chilled pony anyway and didn't bat an eyelid. His owner couldn't believe it when I told her. He turned into such a star pony. :D
I have broken in others though and worn full body armer ;)

Cheers all - it is actually quite weird to know that noone's sat on them before you and you just have no clue how they're going to react. He can be quite giddy when the mood takes him and pretty spooky but he likes to come in and have a 'chat' with people and generally have something done with him and make his brain work. I still was quite surprised he didn't even seem concerned about me getting on board - I was expecting a head up, ears twitching sort of reaction at the very least. I think I will have another go in the next couple of days, maybe with the bridle on too and walk a little way. Will get some much better pics then though!

He looks small in those pics, think it's deceiving seeing as he's almost 16.2hh now! Those were 3 crates stacked so I could get on! hehe :)

I think this does depend on the horse I suppose. I nevre really consider BPs - I may do when I hack him out but I don't know. He has never so far gone up when I've done any ground work with him or when he's gone to shows in hand so i don't expect him to do it to be honest. That's the reaction that concerns me the most i guess. A bit of a buck I can cope with!

I was worried I couldn't hop off quick enough with a bp protector on. Only had one issue with mine, 5th ride around farm, doug walker, well behave dog waiting for us to pass and my boy LOVES dogs and heads straight over, reminding me oh yes I must remind him about steering!! That's the next lesson! keep us updated!

Lovely!

God you'd have a field day with how some of our cobs get done if you think that's bad lol! Start as you mean to go on if you get away with it....makes a much braver horse.

Incidently, my baby horse :) Though I am doing him 'properly' and slowly to be fair as he can be 'shy', plus he's special to me and I have all the time in world for.
