First swallows 2025

Earliest ours have come is the 17th - weather is great atm so maybe sooner this year, or they were put off by the barn owls that have taken up residence! I’d rather cope with swallow 💩 than barn owl whitewashing and pellets but at least we get to see them all year. Will be interesting to see if they come back 🤞🏻
 
Wow - our swallows arrived this afternoon. I am over the moon. Never had them return this late before, and the magpies predated their nest last year so I thought that maybe they’d decided to go somewhere else. Anyone else have late arrivals ?
 
Look!!! They only arrived about a week ago! They have upgraded an old nest which I’ve never seen in use (we’ve been here since 2019) so it shows that leaving old nests in place is a good plan. They’re in our feed shed, but we only go in there to feed the dogs now, so we’ve moved out the dog food etc to leave them in peace.IMG_3764.jpegIMG_3762.jpeg
 
We've had one fallen out of the nest this morning :( It really upsets me when they don't make it, but I will try and not dwell on it. The parents don't seem very attentive this year, so I wonder if they are first time parents.
 
For those who are interested: There is a secret underground organisation of wonderful people who will taxi fallen swallows and swifts to people who can rehab them.
My local one is Summer Wings rescue and they are on Facebook under that name.
They may be able to put you in touch with your local rehabber.
 
Ours are feeding well. Come back every year, in my old boys stable. So lovely to see and hear them 😍 Think there is 5 in the nest.
