I have a nice dutch warmblood mare (see sig pics) she is only 8 but has been injured so I have decided to give her some time off and put her in foal. She was a BYEH finalist as a 4 & 5 year old, was placed at the BE PAVO champs as a 5 year old, went to the BD champs as a 5 year old and went BE novice as a 6 year old and has won over £200 BSJA winnings in a short time. She is well bred with Samber/Ferro Bloodlines and I am not bothered about breeding a coloured I just want to breed something nice for me to keep!

My mare can be a handful on the ground and has quite a dominant attitude but is fab to ride so ideally I would like to put her to a stallion with a fairly laid back attitude! Also my mare is 16.1 and I would like the foal to make a minimum of 16hh so I assume that narrows my stallion choice too?

Can anyone make any recommendations? Ideally I would like a stud that would take her for foaling and weaning.

I have no idea so any help would be appreciated ta!

Penryhn Dictator - Bucks dad and a Cleveland Bay (no suprise there) - he has the most wonderful floaty paces and the most laid back attitude to life. He is about 16hh

Donks is currently in foal to him too.

Thanks StinkerStonkersMum I will look him up. I actaully used to own a Cleveland Bay years ago and she was the safest horse I ever owned so I know they are a nice breed.

holiday I would like an allrounder but more towards the jumping side than the dressage and I am not into showing I cant face all the makeup and hairbrushing its just not me

Aredis what a stunning foal now if I could breed something half as nice I would be made up! I will check out the stallion now!

Amour G is an exciting young stallion who was awarded two Elite Premiums at the BEF Futurity, one for show jumping and one for dressage. He is also graded with the WBS-UK and reg KWPN.
He is about to start his BSJA career along side his dressage one and as soon as the ground improves will go x country schooling too.
He has a very sweet, calm nature and is easy to handle on the ground.......he has to be as I'm only 5' 1 and old enough to be a granny!

PM me if you like the look of him for more details of his website etc.

You may consider Wolkenderry, who although primarily destined for dressage, really jumps too (jumping double clears BSJA BN and Discovery) and was Champion Potential Sport Horse at SHB(GB) last year as a 4yr old. He is really easy to deal with and has been described on one of the forums as "an outstanding mover with a puppy-dog temperament".

Je T'aime Flamenco. Good mover and superstar jumper.
Cruisings Mickey Finn. Good mover and superstar jumper.
Peppermill.
Good mover and superstar jumper.
If that was my mare, I'd be breeding her to a horse at the very top of its game.

If you are using AI you could probably just find a reputable stud near to you that could take your mare for foaling and weaning.

There is a huge range of stallions available to you. You would be welcome to have a look at my chap, Adonnis - he has a fab temperament, is really trainable, and also despite being aimed at dressage has a great jump! You can PM me for more details, or google him to find out a bit more.

Whichever ones you choose to go on your shortlist you should definitely go and visit, so you can make your own mind up on the individuals - we stallion owners will always tell you how fab our boys are (and they are all fab!) but our individual ideas of what makes a good horse will all be slightly different

Good luck in finding the perfect 'hubby' for your mare

Jaxmath, having seen your stallion on the H&C site, I am full of praise for him.One of the very few stallions at the expo IMO to really work from behind. You must be very proud of him!

He is on my list I saw him at the stallion parade at Bramham and eventing at Blenheim last year and he is stunning. I am not sure what his temprament it like tho so I need to look more into that!

Another that might be worth thinking about is El Thuder. He is not an eventer (SJer) but in himself is a real dual purpose stallion who could easily event and has a lot of blood. From what I have heard as well Pippa Funnell has met a few times in comp and really rates him. His termperament is superb and I have regularly given him cuddles whilst he has been lying down in his box. Competition wise, he is now competing Foxhunter and was 2nd last year in the Hickstead 5 yr old champs and also jumped at the World Young Horse Breeding Championships at Zangersheide in Lanaken so isa real prospect for the future!

I have had 2 foals by him and both have been superb. One, out of a sharp (but sweet) chestnut mare is being retained as a stallion prospect as he is not only serious quality, being an awesome mover/jumper and been awarded 1st Prem at the futurityas an eventer, but he also has an amazing temperament and is the most well mannered and sweetest 2 yr olds I have ever known. (He can generally be found sleeping flat out in his stable and you go in to give cuddles). I have also seen almost all of El Thuders foals so far and he stamps ALL of them and all have the same quality and temperament mine have shown.

If you want to see pics of my guys just let me know - have tonnes!

I love the look of Chilli morning and want to use him on a mare or two. Heard that there was a ? over his front leg conformation. Can anyone pm me if they know what this was? He is such a lovely type. Mary King has used him on her mares and she has a very good record for picking the right stallion for her small breeding programme.

Mr Darco is a lovely young stallion. He is 16.1 BWB by Unbelievable Darco. His first foal from last year is here with us and is very athletic looking filly.
He has a fantastic temperament, a real softy both in the stable and under saddle. He is bred for SJ, but does have lovely paces and although only just started his ridden career, already been placed and won both dressage and showjumping. We be aimed at BE this year.

,and in that you're not trying to breed the next Badminton winner, you have goals which are entirely achievable.

Before you consider which stallion to use, and were I in your shoes, then I would consider how you are to actually get your mare in foal.

For a moment, forget the stallion. Perhaps the most vital consideration should be given to the Stud, AI centre, or Vet/Technician who you choose. I would be extremely cautious regarding those "walk in" vets who claim a 90% success rate. The horror stories abound. Send your mare to stud. Importantly, choose a stud which stands, either its own entire horses, or has a teaser on hand. The physical presence of an entire horse will encourage your mare to get herself into a reproductive state, and that may well be very important. Most studs will happily accept semen from other stallions.

Choose a small stud, or a technician, who actually know what they are doing. I don't know where you are geographically, but the extra few quid spent on the carriage of your mare, will most likely prove to be money well spent.

I have no particular interest in any stallions, or studs, for that matter, but there is a lovely horse whose services have been offered to you within this thread. GAN1 owns a delightful horse who is everything, it seems to me, that his owner claims. He's honest, christian, youthful and if you view the H&C vids, then for you, I would suggest that he would be all that you could ask for. The horse is linked to Groomsbridge stud, who have a first class and enviable reputation. They also employ the services of Rossdale vets, from Newmarket, who's charges, so I understand, are reasonable, and acceptable to most. I accept that whilst they, most certainly, aren't alone in their conscientious approach, Groomsbridge will take a mare of mine for foaling, and a second for an AI covering, this year.

It may be that too many of us reach for those stars which are unattainable. You have set realistic goals, and I wish you the best of luck.

Alec.

If you want a stallion with an outstandingly good temperament which he passes on to his offspring, plus has all the other credentials required to sire upper level eventers, why don't you take a look at our boy, Future Illusion
