so I bought my first horse around 2 months ago, he was shod when he came so when I got the farrier out again to re-shoe I didn't know what he was going to be like. Unfortunately I soon found out he wasn't very good and ended up having his shoes off for a week and a half and then went lame. Anyway I had the vet out and she diagnosed him with canker, gave me cyclone blue spray and bute for 3/4 days and said it should clear up and he should be fine. but I'm not on the 4th day and he only looks a little bit better and was wondering how long it takes to clear up/heal and not make him lame? thanks x

Agree - a farrier near us spent probably a year working very closely with a local vet trying to deal with a case of canker.
The horse was being kept at the vets and had frequent visits from the farrier to pare out the canker tissue and clean up the hoof.
It takes more than a bit of spray to get on top of it.

yes she was an equine vet. My farriers coming out on Saturday to put his other shoe back on so will get him to have a look at it. And will look at those links thankyou :) she didn't say it definitely was canker she just said it looks like that's what it is. As I said the blue spray was what my vet gave me I'm only going off what she has said and have no idea if it 'takes more than a bit of spray' (which is being out on twice a day.

Blue spray wont get rid of it if it is true canker. Its a nightmare to treat and requires aggressive treatment and all diseased tissue needs debriding away, this sometimes needs to be done under general anaesthesia. Any trace left behind and it just continues to reoccur. Sometimes the hoof wall and sole need debriding away. Professor knottenbelt has a short talk about it on the eponatv. Its worth watching. http://epona.tv/canker

I wonder if vet said it looked like canker but is first treating as thrush to eliminate it before taking biopsies etc, that would make more sense.
