First time clipping question

Have decided to clip Dylan this winter, for the first time since I got him. Would have done it last year, but by the time I'd got my finger out and he was doing enough work to make it worth bothering it was almost spring! He grows a really thick winter coat so sweats up in anything other than light work.

He'll be getting ridden 4/5 times a week, schooling (indoor & outdoor) and hacking. Stabled at night, turned out most days.

What clip would you recommend? I'd like to leave half his face and his legs, so was thinking a trace or a blanket would be best.

Suggestions = Maltesers

I start mine off with a chase clip and then take more off if I find they need it.

I guess it may depend if you are doing it yourself or paying someone. I do my own so can take extra bits off quite easily if I want to.

Blanket (others may disagree but my main reason for this decision is that I think blanket clips look nicer!)

Seriously though, try him with a trace then if he's still sweating up with that then take more hair off.

My friend once started to hog her pony's mane, went a bit too far so took a bit more off.... and a bit more (because the two sides weren't even) and the pony ended up with a hunter clip!

One of my friends will be doing it, I'll pay her in Morgan's Spiced (after she's clipped my horse, obviously ...)

It really depends *where* your horse gets sweaty!

My cobby mare has *such* a thick coat that she sweats everywhere in the winter! I have sufficient rugs, so I take the lot off!!

I actually don't think you can take 'too much' off, provided you have the rugs to make sure they don't get cold....

If your friend doesn't mind clipping him a couple of times, you could start with a bib clip and take more off depending on how you find it.....
