My dog will be going to boarding kennels for the first time in her life next week. She is 6. The kennels are really good, based on a livery yard and the dogs get to run about in the fields and enclosed arenas. My dog is used to being at the yard with me so I chose this place as it should be more familiar to her and she won't get the half hour short walks on a lead that other kennels offer which she wouldn't like. I took her there today so that when she goes there next week it will be more of a familiar place for her but as it draws closer I'm getting more worried about it and very sad thinking about her in there on her own :(
She is on her own all day when we are at work but then she spends the evenings at the yard with me and sits up in the sofa before bed the sleeps in her bed at the end of our bed at night. Any tips for how I can make her stay away as pleasant as possible? I will be bringing her own bed etc. I'm probably just looking for reassurance for my self tbh:( we are away for 1 week

personally the one time my dogs had to go in kennels I choose a place with fully fenced (including a top) runs and excersise areas as my biggest worry was that my lurcher would run off or get loose and go looking for me. a set up where dogs are walked in livery fields would be a big worry for me

As that is why I chose that place, it's not a worry for me as the fields and arena used for this are fully enclosed and purpose made

Im sure she will be fine, youve prepared her well, you are taking her own bed and perhaps some toys, her own food and a tshirt of yours would also be useful. Its a stressful thing putting them into kennels but its always the owners and not the dogs that find it stressful. Im sure you can ring in the week to put your mind at rest and I would also make sure they put their contact details on her collar and remove yours just in case the worse happened and she escaped.

Dont worry and enjoy your time away.

as long as you are happy the place is secure enough to contain your dog then go and enjoy your time away, taking familiar things is a good idea and something that smells of you like clothing is a good suggestion too

If she spends her day alone, whilst your working, then watching the comings and goings of a busy yard and kennels, she may not want to come home! I honestly think that you're worrying about nothing. Most dogs are gregarious by nature and welcome the interaction which is available when they are with others.
