First time out after 15 weeks box rest and surgery??

Well, Josie's next scan is booked, few weeks away yet. If all is well, and I dont see why it shouldn't be *touches all the wood and anything that looks like wood* she'll be going back out.

Now............I'm scared.

She's had PSD op, so legs WILL be suseptable. When we've been walking, she's developed a lovely bucking habbit. So obvioulsy feels the need for a blast!

But she cant have one!

Anyone got any tips for us? We have a 20 x40 paddock and she'll have a little sec a mate. She is food orientated, but I cant see that winning over all the freshness.

What is the best thing to drug her with? Anything else I should think of?

gloabal herbs superkalm, stick that in a feed and it should take the edge off, they come in sachets and are about £2.50 a sachet
 
id make her paddock smaller aswell, so she doesnt have the room to get speed up, if its possible exercise bandage her legs to give them some support, and enough sedation to keep her grounded.
 
I have had this dilemma. No feed in the morning so she is hungery when she goes out and as much as acp as she is allowed. Before my boy went out I use to hand graze him in a small field - the field I was going to turn him out in so he got use to going in there for a graze.

Apart from that there is not much else you can do apart from keep everything crossed and shut your eyes!!

Tis the option I was plumping for!!

I tried the hand grazing thing yesterday, she just bucked and bucked and bucked! Naughty moo. Wasn't trying to get away, lead rope wasn't even tight, her back (poorly!!) legs wouldn't stay on the floor!!!!

I would not turn her out straight away from box rest. This will be a recipe for disaster.

Walk your horse out in hand with a bridle on (just in case) and a headcollar over it with a lead rope on each side so that two people can walk her out and control her.

Increase this by 5 minutes each day for a period of at least two weeks. This will help strengthen her up.

Start of with a 5 minute walk and increase it by 5 minutes each day
 
It sounds like they're already walking out OWLIE185 .

I'd speak to the vet about some effective dope, even if it means them coming out to inject her. I'm not sure about making the paddock smaller, part of me thinks it's a good idea but if they're that determined they'll run in even a tiny area & then the turns have to be even sharper.

Good luck & will you let me know what you try & how it works? If Jim gets that far I think I'll need all the tips I can get

Thanks OWLIE, ofcourse you are right. She's been walked in hand since week 2. She'll be up to 2 lots of 30 mins by turnout time! I'll be very fit too!!!
