I'm currently on the look out for my first horse. I'm not 100% sure what the horse will be like yet but i'm looking at TBs, TBXs or similar between 15.1-17hh (..so if anyone knows of any..)

What i'm asking is what should i have bought which is fine for any horse regardless? I know i'll need mucking out tools etc.
What else should i have, so i can start buying them in bits and pieces now?

What sort of things do you want to do with the horse? How confident and capable are you? I do know someone selling a mare but it's not a novice ride and needs a confident, firm handler.

Buy wheelbarrow, fork, grooming kit. That's about it until you buy it as something for a 15hh won't fit a 17hh.

You dont know what horse you are getting yet, so I would say dont buy anything other than a headcollar as you dont know what will fit.

I know of several horses who are for sale, why do you want something with TB in it? What type of horse are you looking for in ability?

Buckets, feed bins, grooming kit, wheelbarrow, fork, brush.

Think thats about all you can until you know size etc

I bought following when I got Penny last summer.
Alo vere cream for rubs and wounds/antibacterial cream
Likit for stable 4 buckets, feed trug, 2 headcollars and roap,
stable rug and 2 outdoor one with neck one without
brushing boots over reach boots
wormer, cleaning kit for tack, foot oil and brush, shampoo and 2 old towels for washing, the list can go on and on, but its best to have the basics and then get as you need. I got a lot on ebay, oh and dont forget a good book on stable management my BHS one is invaluable .
Good luck and enjoy your horse owning

I have been thinking of basic items but just wanted to double check. Think i could perhaps get leadropes, lunge lines etc.

I'd prefer TBs or something of a similar build really. I only state TB as i don't want a cob. I'm used to riding them and have had a fair few on loan. I've also found that they're probably the most versatile.
I've been riding for 12 years, have full loaned and shared in the past but this would be my first that's very much my own.
I don't mind one that needs bringing back into work and i'm used to quite green/quirky TBs. During the summer i did most of the work in reschooling an ex racehorse, chestnut TB mare, who was slightly nutty. There also seems to be more of them available. I'm not saying i'm the best rider but have had experience with them.

I'd like something i could do a bit of everything on but prefer jumping to dressage.

Are you planning on full livery or DIY?
If full then you won't need as much stuff.

Good idea to buy the basics beforehand as it is a huge expense.

I find it hard to prioritise so I'll just list everything I can think of that can be used on more than one horse

grooming kit - dandy, body, water brushes, scissors hoof pick - the basics

First aid kit - don't go mad prob just antibacterial wash, dermasol, melolin pads, animalintex and vetwrap.
you will add to it as you go along I guarantee it lol

feed and water buckets. haynets if you plan to use them (i don't).

If DIY - feed bins, mucking out tools.

ETA -

High viz stuff for hacking
Tack cleaning stuff
Hat, boots, whip, body protector

I am in the middle of packing my stuff for a move so it's easy for me to list it all lol x

Thanks

I would be on DIY but with some weeks on full livery. I'm eBaying as we speak.. and have already negotiated a deal with my brother for some of his hi viz stuff (he's a brick layer).

basic grooming kit (dandy brush, body brush, plastic curry comb, mane comb and hoof pick)
basic horsey first aid kit (horseware do one, or get this list of what's in and then raid a chemists and tack shop)
buckets in several sizes (feed, water, skipping out, soaking sugarbeet)
fork, brush and barrow
numnahs/saddlecloths (x3 ish)
head collar and lead rope (if you get an adjustable one it will fit most anything and could be kept as a spare later on when you get a smart one)
plastic dustbins for feed bins (2 or 3)
feed scoops (2 will normally do)
saddle and bridle rack
Rug chest/rug storage thingys

is that enough to get you started?

I'm making a list now that i can tick off once i've bought something.

Peronsally I wouldn't buy anything much! Mainly because I'm a colour-co-ordination freak and couldn't bear teh thought of stuff not matching

What happens if the horse you buy doesn't match the colour you've chosen?!

The only thinkgs I'd get are the non-coloured thign, so first aid kit, feed bins (although they come in colours too....)
