It was my first time driving a horse box today. I had always been taken by other people. I was so nervous! is everyone else like that when a horse is in-tow?
Depends who Im towing and who is keeping me company
Dont like towing by myself so I drive slower than normally and count of landmarks till I get where Im going
If I have company and chating not as bad but I still worry
Someone asked me if I had got to the strage where you forget trailer is attached, think thst would worry me more if I forgot!!
I used to drive a huge wagon and I much preferred it to towing. I hate towing and if OH is around he drives, as I get stressed enough when transporting my horses!
However I HATE being in the car that is towing and so when I can will follow behind in a friend's car. I can't stand the wobbles or thinking that they're being towed and I'm in the car pulling them...would much prefer to be following them so I can see them better!
Oh yes! It's 4 years ago now, but I can still remember what an ordeal I found it. Children had to sit in absolute silence in the back whilst I chainsmoked my way to PC Camp at a max speed of 25 mph which felt absolutely terrifying. (They were very narrow windy roads though).
Believe me, it does get better. My longest trip to date has been 3 hours for PC area competition, that would have been inconceivable back on my first few trips.
it's amazing and terrifying that say they forget they have the trailer and think that it's just the same as driving normally, except that you can't go faster than 50!!!
we have 2 crap trailer drivers at our yard who terrify us all, they don't speed, but they accelerate too hard, brake to hard, don't slow soon enough for junctions or roundabouts and continue round bends as though there was no trailer there!
one of the horses has now completely thrown the towel in and went beserk last time the engine was started and we had to do an emergency unload. it was like she had a panic attack. I was glad in a way. poor horse will at least have a rest from her rollercoaster rides for a while. Problem is, the owner blamed the horse and didn't recognise that it is entirely her fault!!!!!
I came back from cross country training this week, back late, arrived in the dark and I quickly hopped out, took the back ramp down straight away and my horse was standing resting a back leg with a mouthful of hay looking well chilled and relaxed. I think he had an easy journey.
I don't like towing, infact I hate it, If he arrived at the other end looking sweaty or dishevelled I would be questioning what I was doing wrong.
