When you have a new farrier what would you expect from them? Would you expect them to trot horse up, see how they move etc? Or would you just expect them to get on with shoeing?

I've never had one trot a horse up. They have asked if there are any problems. But I am only on my second ever farrier, so no expert, but when I get a new horse they don't trot it up either.

My current farrier walked and trotted mine when I first used him. He does it on a regular basis, not every visit but maybe every other. All my farriers have done this.

Never had a farrier ask for the horse to be trotted up. They're generally pretty clued up about the conformation of the hoof & how that may or may not affect the horses way of going. I don't see the need for a trot up, unless there is a lameness issue - in which case a vet should investigate.

depends what the reason is for the farrier coming out! I've never had one do that but my horse is currently recovering from injuries and is having remedial shoeing done, so would expect my farrier to see him move every couple of shoeings

No.
If you really want his expert opinion, to be frank you would need X-rays and him to spend best part of an hour analysing conformation as well as gait. X rays would show any conformational fault within the hoof which is not visible externally.
Are you prepared to pay a lot more for that?
I know I am not.i Am happy with the farriers I use too, and trust their judgement.

All my farriers have watched my lot walk up to him, but have never had them trotted up, how ever, I have had my farrier carry his tools across the field to save my TB hobble back to the gate, due to an abcess and my thuglett baby cob chasing him from the gate, the TB not the farrier, I always have horses ready, feet picked out and reasonably dry for the farrier coming

I have had the same farrier for over forty years. He has watched my horses grow up. He has seen them trotted up and does watch them move. When I had X-rays done on my old boys feet, they were emailed to him.
Yep I know how lucky I am!!!
