I have only had my horse about 2 1/2 months now and have just been getting used to each othe really (did start doing really wel but then due to work commitments it all went to poo) so now we are starting from the beginning again, he is an ex hunt horse is like a big gentle giant, but dies can get quite excitable when i am schooling him. So i toook him for a a hack out today and we have got a really really long grass track near us so thought what the hell, i will give him a canter and see what he was like. I was worried that he was going to fly off with me as ini the school he gets excited with himself, but Oh my god!!! he was sooo well behaved and it was such a nice controlled canter!!! he was on the bridle and everything!!

SO my questions is why can he get so giddy when i am in the school with him?

He is used to working in open spaces if hes an ex hunter so has been taught to be contolled in these situations. All horses react differently in different situations, perhaps he gets excited or even a little aprehensive in the school, im sure he will calm down once he gets used to his new life

yeah i am sure he will, i was just soooo chuffed with him as i really did brace myself for the worst and he just went sooo lovely! Has made me want to build up to hunting him now as i think he would be goof for me!
 
first of all Jodie, Im so pleased you had a lovely canter out hacking!
I remember that feeling , new horse, getting used to each other, is he going to charge off!

He could just not like the school having not done much schooling, or maybe he just finds it boring or he doesnt see the point in it!
 
it was a brilliant feeling and he seemed soooo pleased with himself after we had done it! lol

I do think that he is used to the schooling but he has got better since we got him as when he first went into the school with other horses he felt the need to race them allt he time! lol Bu we are getting there and my yard manager has been really positive with him she said that it will be his year this year and we are really going to gt cracked on with him!

Sounds complicated but its really easy once you have your PB account!
 
TBH if he is an ex hunter he is going to be particulary keen on schooling i know some ex hunters who wont school just end up being used as a happy hacker!! Just do it in stages until he gets used to idea it will be hard at first but it will pay off in the end!
 
Well since i have started back on with him i have just been doing it in blocks of 30minutes so he doesnt really have time to get bored, i have alos been lungeing him as well, am trying to vary what he does as much as posible
