One thing I cannot stand is fat riders, (sorry if I offend anyone.) Those who compete are not athletes or sportsmen (had to get that off my chest
)
I joined the gym about six months ago, although recently haven't had the time to go. Seeing as I can't afford a personal trainer, I followed much of the advice Callum Taylor wrote in eventingworldwide last year. When I began I couldn't balance on one of the gym balls, but now can stand and do squats on them... as well as 75 sit ups
which has improved my core strength (hopefully!) so that I'm more effective at things like half halting using my upper body etc.

How on earth do you stand on do squats on a gym ball? Do you mean the big bouncy blow up ball things? (technical term there!
Um ride Blue 5 x a week, Holly, 2 x a week (sometimes 3) muck out 3 horses 5 x a week, pole dancing 2 x a week and will soon have another 2 horses to ride as often as i can manage - not looking to be all that often other than both days at the weekends!
I'm pretty fit atm, I have my own 8 to muck out in the morn, then go to work and ride 4 and then have to ride 3 of my own in the afternoon and sometimes another few for people in the evenings. Also jobs at home like turning in and out, moving hay/haylage, carrying bags of food, shovelling shavings etc are all pretty good workouts. I wish I had time to go to pilates or yoga but don't. I try and take the dogs for a walk if I have time but they usually come hacking with me!
Pretty busy today though as had 1 hack and 3 jumping sessions this morn, gave my own 2 a hack each and am off soon to go and do another in the school, just here while I grab a cup of tea!! Weekends aren't too bad as I usually just have mine to do and usually take them jumping or competing.
I felt i was fit enough last year, to ride up to CIC 2* level, i was riding up to 8 horses a day, although not doing any mucking out etc.. however the CCI** i did at the end of the season really shocked me as to how fit i needed to be.. at the end of the 9min XC i was puffing as much as the horse was
This season i'm planning on having a go at Adv. and poss even a 3* and am really worried about getting myself fit enough..
I've started going to the gym.. only 2 times a week at the mo. although that will become 3 times a week nearer the season..
I'm still riding 7 or 8 horses a day (at different yards) so it's a really long day for me, where i don't even have time for a lunch break
I also plan to fit in a Pilates class once a week too, as i've been told that's really good for riding
I'm shocked at how much everyone does, it puts me to shame...maybe it's my age?!
My average week is: mucking out 4 or 5 three days a week, riding 3 most days, riding 5 two days a week, hunting for 3-4 hours twice a week. Two days a week I am in the office so ride before I leave for work at 8, all the other days (even my "working from home" day) I am always out and about on the yard, sweeping, skipping out, to-ing and fro-ing from the fields and generally being on the go.
I used to swim a lot when I only had one horse in work, but now I don't really get the time. I do get tired, but overall I think I'm fit enough to compete at the level I do.
I feel I'm relatively fit but after reading what everyone else does on here I'm feeling very unfit! I get up at 5.30am to feed and muck out 4 horses before leaving for work at 6.45. Luckily the 5th lives out so is easy to look after. Unfortunately work is 45 miles away so I don't get home til 5.45-6pm then it's time to put horses to bed. I haven't got an arena at home so I've started taking 2 to a local arena for an hour twice a week which is my only exercise during the week. I usually ride 3 both days at the weekend.
I would go to the gym but the closest one is a trek away and to be honest I haven't got the motivation after a long day at work. I would go in my lunch break/on way home for work but I lift share so it isn't possible and would require an extra journey out. I have run a half marathon every year for the last 3 years but I won't be doing one again as my knees and ankles hurt too much
Right, I'm off to the exercise bike we've got here now as I'm feeling lazy compared to you lot
I cycle to work 5 days a week for an hour (apart from winter break from 1st December; will resume again in the end of Feb) and do Equilates (form of Pilates for Equestrians - EQUILATES ) at home on top of running about when teaching!
I dont believe that just doing horses - riding and mucking out etc makes you fit enough for competing....
I have varied from working on a yard with 30 horses and riding at least 6 or 7 a day (2 of us mucking out) to just having mine at home - 4 of them and riding 2 a day. I look at pics now compared to when working on the yard and my legs are HUGE lol. However then and now i've always done more exercise - gym gym gym. Actually at the mo i've not rejoined the gym so cycle 4 times a week, do an aerobics class and a boxercise DVD.
Jane Holderness Rhoddam says to be fit enough to do a 3DE you should do 800 skips a day. Mary King also swears by skipping and is (According to my/her physio) the fittest person he knows.
A lot of professional riders do more fitness on top of their riding and I'm afraid i'm another - unfit/overweight riders out competing drives me mad!!
Well like my horses I like to keep myself 'showjumping fit' rather than 'eventing fit'
I spend approximately 3.5 hours a day sat on a train. I do walk about 10 minutes each way from the station to the office and back again at a brisk walk. I then spend about 9 hours a day sitting at my desk 'exercising' my fingers (VERY important for riding !) on the keyboard. I am also a member of the gym at work....in fact I even went down there once too....but wasn't impressed
I regularly spend between 2 and 3 hours in the pub on a friday lunchtime and on top of that strenuous routine I then indulge myself in my HOBBY and ride my two horses 4 or 5 times a week. I don't 'do' yard duties as we are on full livery. OH rides them once or twice a week as well to make sure they stay fit enough to carry their 'fat and overweight' rider at weekends...
Whilst I am no olympic athlete I am fit enough to compete both horses to a satisfactory level and do reasonably well with both of them and don't believe that at the level we currently compete that it is necessary to be fit enough to run a marathon
I'm afraid the one thing that really annoys ME is 'skinny' overhorsed people at shows who can't control their animals as they don't have the necessary 'bulk' to do so
I am with Rambo on this one. Good luck to all you keen althletes. I have either the time nor the inclination to do additional exercise.
I have a busy job - 9 to 10 hour days and 2 small children. I ride 3 - 4 times a week. I need to use my lunchtimes to either work, network or catch up with firends.
Look at the top showjumpers - many of them do not look like they spend much time at the gym so I think I'll be OK! Notice I am not mentioning names of any roundish showjumpers to avoid defamation.
I like to think I'm quite fit(although I dont look it!) But I would like to be fitter. I've got two horses, both of which I ride, muck out etc 5 days a week.
Somedays I'll walk to/from work depending on where I'm based, I walk 30-40 minutes to or from the yard 2/3 days a week and go running 3/4 days a week
I have a dog that I walk everyday for over an hour.
I'm also a gym go-er and I do yoga! I go swimming occasionally, but havent been able to go recently due to low self esteem =(
I'm waiting for the OH to fix his bike so I can start playing on that too... And I wonder why I have no time to sit down?!?! lol
