Now the snow seems to be on its way out its time to get back into action!
What kind of fitness plan do you all have for your horses? Do you take your time or get straight back to work? Who starts with lots of walking and who just gets back on and gets straight back to normal?
I want to take things slow with mine, I have a green 6 year old friesian and a 13 year old showjumper warmblood, both out of action for at least a month and a half, warmblood gets VERY stiff when out of work, especially through her back. Friesian gets VERY fizzy when not in work!
Any ideas for a fitness plan?

Well my lad has had 5 months out of work due to laminitis in September...so I will be taking things VERY steady! I will start with short walks in hand along the lanes and build up to our usual loop which is approx 2 miles. Once I am confident he can cope with that I will get on and ride him along the same loop - all in walk (hopefully!) for 6 weeks and then build things up from there. I think it will be 2 months before I trot him and I plan to box him to our local disused railway line where I can walk him for as many miles as I like on a nice flat surface.
But my circumstances are different to most I guess...but I am still not looking forward to it...he walked round the corner with me today to our drive for the farrier and jogged the whole way snorting at everything!!!

oh no, sounds like my mare! I will attempt to walk her a LOT as her back needs extra care, but no doubt she will spook and gallop off up the road or something silly!! Good luck with yours
