Hello all
We are attending the Winter League Finals at Cricklands on the 16-18th April 2010 and I need some help putting together a fitness plan to make sure my boy is ready.
This might be long but I will try and give you lots of details to help
For anyone who doesnt know. The show is over 3 days and we will be competing in two sections (2ft6 and 2ft9) over that weekend so probably in total we will be jumping in approx 7 different classes some of which will hopefully include a jump off.
His current fitness is a little poor and he could do with loosing a bit of weight!
He currently is happy to jump round a set of showjumps at about 2ft9/3ft at a show but by the 2nd class will feel a little on the tired side.
He is a good doer so I dont think it would go to his head being super fit so if we can get there then all the better!
I have access (when the ice finally decides to go away) to the following:
A nice quiet set of roads on a housing estate that would allow approximately 3miles ish of hacking purely on roads That includes some short ish hills and some longer straight flat sections.
Farm tracks that can be used on short or longer routes and in the drier months (fingers crossed thats soon) the edges of the fields are also avalible probably making the longest ride approx 6miles ish.
We also have access to designated horse tracks on a local common.. but the circular route is only approx 2miles but does link into the roads I mentioned earlier.
The yard also has a small (but occasionally very loose) indoor school walk and trot is ok all the time.. but cantering can be a bit dodgy we can if the surface is behaving canter circles.. but as the school measures only 13m by 30m its a bit tight.
Currently due to the lack of daylight hours outdoor riding is limited to the weekends.
I also have access to transport and plan to do a couple of shows in the mean time and some XC to keep the exercise fun. (XC would be jump a few walk a bit jump a few walk a bit etc rather than a whole course in one go)
So can anyone help me formulate some sort of two/three week plan that I can do for the next few months to be ready for the big event.
He is stabled at night and out in the day normally.
And Just in case its important he is a 15hh Cob x appaloosa and is 14yrs old.
Thanks in advance!
