I've had lots of conflicting advice about how quickly to progress with a fitness programme with my horse who has recently recovered from a hind suspensory ligament strain (he's been off work 3 months but had 9 hours a day turnout for the last month).

I have limited time; 45 minutes a day during the week and 1.5 hours a day during the weekends.

I would like to get him fit enough to school for 45 minutes twice a week and do a dressage test or showing class once a month.

I've currently completed a week of walking for 45 minutes a day on the flat.

Suggestions on an appropriate fittening regime would be much appreciated.

I would keep going as you are. I have had to friends who have horses who have done exactly the same as your horse and they walk for as long as possible. Keep going as you are. 45 minutes is good - I know it can get so boring sometimes but you reap the results a couple of months down the line when they are ready to start trotting etc.

Well done!
