I hope you can help!
My 16 month old labxcollie had a fit early Monday morn only 2-3 mins in all. Rang the vet first thing and she said could be start of Adult epilispy? he had 2nd fit 10-20am in back of car on my way to my field and asgain 2-3 mins.
He had 3 fit 5-40am this morning but it was even shorter before being back to normal and again had a fit in the car about 5 mins after we started off home and again the recovery time was fast.
But my other 3 dogs don't want anything to do with him, in fact his best buddy Buster runs the other way??
these fits have taken us all by surprise and I find it upsetting, would the dogs feel the same???

It will be very unsettling for the other dogs, yes, they will not understand.

Has he been in the vets? He will probably need medication which will enable him to have a normal life, although that sounds like a lot of fitting in a short space of time.

My friend's OES lives a totally normal life with no fitting, on medication.

Really? I'd have him in ASAP if he were mine, don't be afraid to press the issue. Or go to another vet.

I don't like to compare animals to humans but there is no way you wouldn't take a child to the doctors if they had a fit.

Well I would quite happily, but then the twins will tell you how much I think of all my animals

Agree with other comments though, please get him to a vet my son has epilepsy but when he went on medication it stopped the seizures literally overnight. No reason why he should not continue to live a near as normal life.

All the best

My old Cocker used to have the occasional seizure. When he had the first one, I took him to the vet.

We were, like you, asked to note down when he had them and their duration/effect on him. If we were concerned at any time, or if he had numerous episodes, we were to take him straight back of course....but were given an appointment for a month's time. (Bear in mind he'd only had one at this point).

When we went back he hadn't had another seizure, but he did have another one about three months after the first. Due to the frequency and mildness of them, the vet said it wasn't worth medicating him unless they got more regular or if they knocked him out (Jasper never blacked out, his were classed as "pre-epileptic seizures).

Now, I am pretty sure if I had a dog which had suffered this many seizures in that space of time that my vet would want to investigate, as would I, and possibly medicate if no other clinical cause for the seizures could be found.

If your dog well in itself in between seizures? Does it take a while for your dog to return to "normal" afterwards? Has you dog been itself on the run up to the first seizure, or had they been a little off their feed, etc beforehand?

For my dog, they never got any worse. I would not hesitate to take yours to the vet for a second opinion if he was mine.

that many seizures and your vet isn't worried? hmmmm. i dont treat them unless they're having them more frequently than one every few months, but that many is a big risk for going into status epilepticus. at the very least bloods should be done to rule out a metabolic or parasitic cause of the seizures.

That ties in with the advice we were given with Jasper.

I have heard of a cat with such fits. The owner (a nurse) had heard that high triglycerides in the blood often cause fits and they have changed the food to a minimal fat content and the cat has had no more fits . Have you changed your dogs food recently? A good reason for blood analysis as said by STAR above.
Also I have head that in collies, where there seems to be a higher incidence of fitting, low doses of Vit E help to keep a dog off the meds.

Did your dog lose consciousness, eyes roll, or just wobble about? Only ask as I had a lab who I thought was fitting/ having a stroke and it turned out that he had tweaked his back - a bit like the sudden pain from a slipped disc. With rest the 'fits' stopped and he never had any more.

But I would cetainly be beating a path to my vet's door.
Good luck.

Hi everyone. Ben hasn't had a fit (touch wood) since Wednesday and both of very short duration. MY OH and I think he may have eaten something or he's also drunk from my goldfish pond which I had poured hot water on to help go through the ice to let out the carbon stuff so my fish don't die. He's back to his normal self creating havoc. So fingers crossed and yes the first sign of him fitting again he's down the vets. but my vets are very good, they always remember my dogs and their names and my horses
Thomas they love, Ben they love, Buster they hate. he tries to bite them even with muzzle on. I do have them on program that the vets do, so I get called in for each dog for health check, worming fleas and get some much discount for any further vet conciltations
