Fitten, fittening, refittening- just horsey words?

Just had a wierd conversation with a colleague. He was asking how not being ridden for over a month (I've given up til after Christmas - just too busy and lost my mojo a bit) would affect the horses. I said I'd have to do some refittening work and was about to say that apart from that they're both reasonably calm individuals so I wouldn't need to worry about getting back on after a months break.

But I didn't get that far!! Apparently refitten is a bizarre word as are fitten and fittening! I thought they were perfectly normal words but colleague can't get his head round them and after us both saying them about 40 times they now all sound ridiculous.

They're not in online dictionaries and searches bring you straight to horsey stuff. So they appear to be 'bizarre' horsey words, which I'd never really thought about before. LOL

yeap - i dont think they exist either!

you would say 'to get fit' they are unfit' and 'to get them fit again' - couldnt do refit as that would mean to refit an object I would have thought!

cant say i have heard these terms in the horse world either??!

I use fitten and fittening but not sure they are actually words. Wouldn't use refittening though . . .

but now you've mentioned it, it does sound a bit odd!!

I use them and no one has questioned me but I know what you mean.
I referred to OH as in a soft condition (as opposed to hard) the other day which apparently cant be used to describe humans!!!

They are definitely not proper words but I've been using them with no question for aaaages I think because I am using fitten and fittening to apply to something I am 'doing' to a horse then it sort of works but I'd never use them if I was referring to myself and they do sound daft now its been questioned!
