me and my lad are happy hackers, max rides are about 2 hours with a bit of everything.

We are goig to a sponsored ride on the 21st September, which I think is 10 miles and will take about 3 hours with all kind available, even jumps, which I may do a few but not many as we dont jump normally. He will be totally full of it as the last time I went on one was 4 years ago and he was a nightmare.

What kind of work can I do to get him a bit fitter ? bearing in mind I can only ride Wed and Fri eve's depending on work and saturdays and sundays. He does RDA work during the week which is only walking and a little school trotting.

He lives out 24/7 and the grass is restricted so is not piling on the pounds. He hates schooling so it is all hack work, I can lunge in the school, he just about does that with out a tantrum.

Advice appreciated

I would increase your trot work a bit. Try to trot as much as you can. TBH I doubt he will need to be too much fitter as he will be on a high anyway and 10 miles is not that far.

Good luck for the ride.

I second hills if you have them, keep the pace steady and really make him work. You can try doing some circuit training if your hacking isn't suitable for more trot/fast work. Like Irishcobs said he is probably not far off on your current regime especially if you aren't planning to ride round like a loon, maybe just needs a little more canter work. Have fun!
