My RI has recommended that I try Daisy in a running martingale because she will occassionally stick her head up like a giraffe out on hacks so that she can go at the speed she chooses.

I know how to attach one but I've never had to measure one from scratch before. Could someone type me out an idiot's guide?

Thankies

The strap which goes around the horses neck should be loose enough to fit your fist between that and the horses neck. Hopefully it will make the part which is attatched to the girl slack enuogh. I also thing there should be a hands wwidth (fingers spred - thumb to last finger) between the part of the martingale with the rings on to the horses throat.

I hope that is correct (stand to be corrected) and you understand.

I'm being dim but I don't get this bit?

The actual martingale bit should be long enough to touch the horses gullet (under throat) or to the withers when the horse is relaxed. Far too many people fit a martingale too tight, its a pet hate of mine!!

Once you think you have fitted it correctly, get on, pick up your reins with a contact on the horses mouth, the reins should be in a straight line i.e. the martingale should not pull down on the reins so they bend.... at the point of the horse standing naturally with a contact on the mouth the reins should be straight and the the two straps of the martigale should be hanging almost straight, a slight loosness in them if anything.....

Does that make sense?
