Basically i want to get my boy going in a pelham so I have the double reins for showing without having to use a double bridle, he is fine with the actual bit itself when i tried it the other day but wanted some advice on fitting the curb chain?
Just want to have a play with it so he gets used to the feel before having a lesson in it, thanks

Hi, the curb chain should be fitted so that it comes into play when the shanks of the bit are brought back to about 45 degrees. It's important to make sure that it lies flat against the chin with no twists. Some horses prefer leather or elastic curbs, so if he backs off too much one of those may be worth a try.

Good luck!

Thanks, also one of the curb hooks is closed if u see what I mean to keep the chain in place but the other one is wide open as it have'nt fitted it yet. Once it is fitted do i need to tighten the the open one so it keeps the chain in place?

No you keep this open so that you can put the curb chain on and then take it off. If it was cloed you wouldn't be able to remove or adjust it easily.

No, you're supposed to use a lip strap to be totally correct and to keep the chain from riding up, although if you haven't got one then wrapping a plaiting band over the top stops it from coming undone ;)
