Fitting a Thorowgood Cob Saddle - HELP!

I need a cob saddle for my horse as she is very wide and has no wither.

I've downloaded the fitting guide from the Thorowgood site, printed it out and put the template of my horse against it. I traced the outline of my template and it is wider/flatter than even their silver gullet measurement (her traced shape is like a rainbow arch - no wither what so ever).

So, from this do I take it that my horse is off their scale and that even their widest (silver) gullet would be too narrow for her?

If so, where do I go from here? Can't afford to have a saddle made.

Please - any ideas anyone?????

If I lived in the uk I would have aready got a saddle fitter out without hesitation, however, I don't live in the uk.

I have already spoken to the only saddle fitter in a 100km radius and he has nothing secondhand to suit and could only suggest a Thorowgood, which is why I downloaded the fitting guide.

Any other ideas folks?

Treeless was the first type of saddle I tried. It slipped around her and constantly ended up on her side.

The last saddle I bought has a tree and is XXW but because it still has some clearance for withers (and it's not for a high withered horse), it sits too high.

Right now I'm stumped as to what to try next.

If anyone knows of a treeless saddle that might stay in place, guess I could try another make but as one treeless saddle slipped round I assumed they all would.

Help?!

I would try her with the silver gullet, but with the proviso to stop should she be at all uncomfortable. The saddles are easy to resell if it doesnt work out, and it doesnt sound as if anything much wider is available.

NB one possibility, when my Haflinger was measured/tried in saddles, she was an XXW in a Thorowgood cob but only an XW in an Ideal Highland and Cob (H&C), so that might be worth considering if you can find one in an XXW or even wider.

The other thing I did with my Haffie was put her on a diet, yours may just be that shape without being podgy but mine did need to lose some weight, and she is a little narrower now.

good luck!

treeless wise I found the best (tho not the cheapest) were the beautiful Treefree Dartmoor ones, and they didnt slip round. Made in UK and v high quality. Again very re sellable if not right.

I have a thorowgood cob saddle. I found the measuring chart quite misleading, i managed to measure her way off the scale, she too has no withers. Although it could be my horse measuring skills to blame. I had one professionally fitted and the silver was actually a little wide. If you know what you are looking at i would recommend trying one. There are a lot of good second hand ones on the market, and they are easy to resell.
