Fitting Your Horse in Around A Demanding Job

Looking for work now, but when I had a full-time job, I needed part livery (i.e. no mucking out, feeding, turning out/bringing in for me!!!). She still gets all that now.

I used to commute a min. 90 minutes to work one-way each week and had work hours that went well beyond 9-5. I couldn't have a horse without at least the part livery option.

Well, I'm having my first taste of this working and horses malarky! I work 8.30 til 5 mon-fri and I have a share horse to do three times a week...it's proving more tiring than I imagined it would be! On "my" days I get to the yard at 6pm ish...ride, muck out, sort feeds...get home before 9pm (no idea how it always takes so long)...then get on with the 8000 word dissertation I have to write!
Hopefully when I graduate I'll be earning enough to keep my horses on full/part livery!

I decided to take a sabbatical from the horsey world for a few years, as I decided it wouldn't be fair on me or the horse to try and do both. I could keep a horse at full livery, but if I just want to ride once or twice a week, then I can do that without the costs and headaches associated with ownership. I watched some friends start to resent their horse, or regard them as a chore when work took over, and I would rather take a break entirely than sour my relationship with horses.

I am lucky in that I have a couple of friends with horses who welcome me to come and play ponies whenever I like, so I can still get my fix.

Yeh, I tried this and it drove me insane. I've had a horse since I was three and I just can't be happy without one. I was miserable when I was horseless.

He will never become a chore! I just wish I got to spend more hours with him.

I work on average 8-5 as an auditor and have to take work home if I am working to tight deadlines. Until recently have been studying for a professional qualification equivalent to a Masters degree, but thank F that is over with and am now fully qualified! Also have an active social life - work in Manchester and it is difficult not to get involved when everyone goes out from work partying!!

Oh and OH also needs to get a look in! On the plus side it pays well and I have flexitime which is useful when you need to pop hom for the farrier/vet etc.

It is not what I wanted to be when I grew up. But horse are the reason I did Uni and went down the route I did, as it enables me to sustain my horse, house, car, shoe obsession etc!!

However, I could happily play horses all day, even if it means getting cold, wet and full of 5h1t!!! But can't seem to find the gig that would pay the same
