five stage vetting...too much for a young horse?

ok, was looking to have a 5yr old vetted, wanted a 5 stage done, this horse has been out in a field until a week ago, and has just been backed, the owners vet was concerned that a 5 stage would be too much to expect of him, as he is unfit and unworked, is this a fair comment? should i just go ahead with a 3 stage or insist on a full 5 stage?

Insist on 5 stage. They only work the horse until heart rate is raised and this will take far shorter time in an unfit horse
 
I personally am not bothered by a 5 stage with a young horse. My boy was vetted as a just backed horse, he had a 2stage and vet also had him exercised for a short period to make sure nothing showed up with heart/lungs after work, but personally think it is unfair to expect them to do the hard work required if they have been out of work. Just my opinion though!!
 
agree with Boss, they only work them until their HR goes up anyways, so hes not going to be worked until hes knackered. Id want a 5stage just for piece of mind, but thats my personal opinion.
 
I don’t think so. The only hardish thing is when you have to increase their heart rate, and a vet will know when enough is enough. Nothing else should be too trying for a 5 year old.

I would go for a stage 5, saying she who didn't even get hers vetted.
 
so they wont insist on doing half an hours exersise? dont think he'd cope with that

waiting for my vet to ring me to see what she thinks, although think she will say insist on a 5 stage
 
Ryu had a five stage when I bought him last year he was 4 and a half and had been back in work a week after being turned away for a year, my vet insisted he was ridden rather than lunged and the seller cantered him round the school on both riens untill he was puffing a bit, I'm really glad I witness all of this as it brought into perspective the work he'd need he was all over the place! But health wise completely fine and passed with flying colours, vet just warned me he'd be hard work! (he was spot on)
 
Bought my 5 year old as 'only just backed' and he went through two 5 stages in a week with no ill effect!

The vet will take his age and experience into account when doing the tests, he wont run the horse into the ground for the sake of it. They can lunge or ride as necessary.

In your case I would now insist on the full 5 stage.
 
Agree with Boss!!

I would insist on a 5 stage!! My mare had only been backed a few months when i bought her and she had a 5 stage done and it didn't harm her.
 
Agree with the others INSIST on 5 stage vetting now!

Why would a seller steer you away from this???

Depending upon the cost of the horse the insurance company will insist on seeing the 5 stage vetting anyway!
 
i was on the same line of thinking, if she was going to insist he wasnt fit enough for a 5 stage then i was going to walk away anyway, dont want another disaster, as it is think she is a very over protective owner, who is genuine but still want a 5 stage

5 isn't young, as Boss as said they will only do enought to get the HR up. And from the other posts that have been on here this week in relation to Oldmare, you want someone sat on him to do the work and not lunged.
 
I had a 3yo 5 stage vetted, she sailed through the first three stages and then failed during work on the lunge (wind and lamness on a circle) so YES,def insist on 5 stage... the fact they are trying to steer you clear would make me all the more determined!
 
Go for the 5 Stage - it is tailored to individual horses therefore of course it won't be too much for the horse. I am surprised to hear a vet showing concern about this?? Can't be much of a vet......
 
The only bit I would avoid is if the vet wants to lunge them in trot on a tight circle on hard ground. This is not good for any horse and could easily cause problems rather than find them!
 
Also if you are spending over 5k and want to insure it most insurance companies want a 5 stage certificate!
