Fixed peak hats

I know you cannot wear fixed peak hats at any level of competition for xc, however does this rule apply for doing xc just for fun?

I would check what your XC venue stipulates regarding hats as most stipulate no fixed peaks

Some modern hats with peaks that shatter so I believe they could be ok to use XC but I would always wear a skull cap so think the answer it that it will depend on your hat and venue! Sorry not really an answer

The only answer there is though.

Some venues specify that you must have a compliant had to ride on the course. (Although how they police that as long as you don't fall off and try to sue them I don't know..) Some don't. Check with the venue.

But do bear in mind the no fixed peak rule is there for safety. Obviously no-one wants to fall off at all. But if you do there is no point in doing something which risks making the injury worse.

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but I am sure I saw a French female rider @ Badminton wearing a 'fixed' peak hat. Not sure what brand it was though (but guessing one that involves a mortgage for us mere mortals )

I did too - I think there were 3 riders in what looked like a Uvex hat with an integral peak. (I thought German - but open to being wrong in that.) The BE rules state:

Cross Country Protective Headwear’ is a “Jockey Skull” of an even round or
elliptical shape with a smooth or slightly abrasive surface, having no peak or peak
type extensions. Noticeable protuberances above the eyes or to the front not greater
than 5mm, smooth and rounded in nature are permitted. It must also comply with
the ‘Protective Headwear’ criteria and be tagged as set out above. A removable hat
cover with a light flexible peak may be used.

So I can only presume they were lightweight covers?

Start at €295 for an off the shelf, non-xc hat.

So OP, if you are lucky enough to be able to afford a XC legal version of this hat, you can wear while schooling and competing.

FWIW - while I make a point of wearing a crash cap if I make a point of XC schooling (only happened once in the last 10 years!!), I 9/10 will wear my peaked hat out hacking and round the farm rides in the area and will jump a couple of times there....

Like others have said, check with the venue.

I'm pretty sure that it was mentioned in one of the Badminton threads that the FEI hat rules are different from the BE ones. So IIRC the peaked Uvex is OK for FEI but not for BE.

FEI rules allow them, BE (and I have a feeling PC and RC) don't.
