I ride a hunting horse, called Mertle. She's a 16.2hh thoroughbred and she's gorgeous. But when were out riding she suddenly has what we call a 'Mertle Meltdown'. Where suddenly, she'll be going along perfectly, she starts up. She rears and back up and backs up and backs up, throwing her head. After about 2 minutes of constant kicking she'll just happily walk off as if nothing has happened! WEIRD! We think she may have a fixed trauma that suddenly just controls her brain. I guess we'll never know!

Anyone else got a situation like this??:o

TBH it sounds like some sort of pain issue. Horses don't often do things for no good reason, despite what their riders think.

you'll know if you get a full vet workup.

My tb did the same and turned out it was kissing spine and a sacroliliac injury. It would just kick in at odd moments and he would go haywire. In 30 years i've never seen a horse act up that way unless its pain related.

Yeh, i thought that at first. But we got the vet out to give her a check over and they didnt find anything wrong  but she just seems to do it if we start hacking somewhere she can gallop. My guess is she just want to gallop. What seems to happen is she gets worked up by something and and if you let her trot or canter or go faster basically she calms down and is fine again? It feels like its letting out the tension? Any ideas?:confused:

I was almost convinced it was because she was in pain. But the vet said otherwise. I just don't know what it could be really. As i said before it seems to happen in like a place she could gallop.... if we let her. And she just starts to jog and throw her head. Then she'll start to back up. But if you just trot her or let her slowly canter it seems to sort of, in a way, relieve the tension ?
