My lovely rug wrecker managed to attach himself to his stable door the other day and as a result he has managed to rip his rug and the rip is about 1m long!

As the rug is a very useful weight I don't really want to throw it out. The thing is the cost of repairing it will be quite expensive (due to the nature of the rip) and it will be more than I actually paid for the rug. As I can't afford to replace it at this current time I was wondering if I could sort of duct tape along the rip to hold it together.

Has anyone actually done this and did it work?

Yes, I tried and failed completely!!
Did it on a turn out rug though, it lasted until he rolled, which was about 10 minutes....

Duct tape will just come off after a day. Could you try sewing it yourself with some heavy duty thread? If not, I would glue it :)

Doesn't last long or try a DIY repair yourself with some sewing then sail repair tape over the top which works better but tbh I usually get it repaired by someone local for about £10-15 depending on the work involved

Duct tape will work until the rug gets wet, but actually I've had repairs last a few weeks

Poundland currently has evostick for £1 and then you just need an old rug for patching - these patches will stay in place for ages and are waterpoof.

oh dear :/ I don't think glue would work as the material has been pulled apart too much/the gap is too big :( I could have a go at sewing and maybe see if I can find some patches to sew on top. The rug wash and repairs I use have quoted me £17 which is more than I paid for the rug :/

I might have to start trawling ebay then!

Its doable - and another tip - if its a massive tear, use duct tape on the inside to hold it together, then use evostick to make the patch, ideally put something heavy on top to keep it in place and it should be usable in a few hours.

I fixed a small rip (well mum did) with duc tape but its th black gorilla one that costs £12 a roll and peels you skinn off your hand when it gets caught! It has lasted half of the winter:D

It is quite a big rip  I'll probably give this a go then thanks :)

I did all my rug repairs with clear strong adhesive. Get the sides of the tear up together, run the glue along the join and when its dry, run a wide band of glue along it again (spread it with a lolly stick if you want) so it is like a giant plaster. I never ever bothered with patches and none of my repairs ever leaked plus it was cheap and really quick to do.

Buy one of those packs that have the material in either canvas or synthetic that have the glue in with them and just cut out and stick, they sell them in most tack shops or buy off Ebay.

I have a youngster in a rug that almost looks patchwork now! I have used duct tape as a quick fix for a day or so until I can get rug off to fix.
