Fjords?

Anyone have any particular opinions or experience of this breed of horse?

Also does anyone know if they are good weight carriers or whether someone of 5'9 would look out of place on one?

I've met a couple of them and they have been lovely- very cute and endering

They are quite sturdy, so would have thought weight shouldn't be such an issue for them.
 
I've only known one and he was lovely. He was incredibly sturdy but a bit tall for an average fjord at 15hh. I used to ride him at 5ft 8 and found that his width took my height really well. Sweet little horse but not particularly talented. He was evil to jump if you asked him to do anything over about 1ft6 and didn't like energetic schooling. He was sweet to hack and would really look after beginners, depends what you are looking for really, a hack or a RC allrounder

If he is typical of the breed (which i believe he is) then you can’t go wrong. He is 14hh/14’1hh, and my sister GinaGem rides him and she is 5ft9.

I'm not looking for another 2 years to get a horse of my own but have always wanted a pure breed and a hardy one. I will mostly be looking for a hack with the occasional few jumping competitions at small height and very very novice dressage.

Possibly for showing at breed shows as well if the breeding and confirmation is there.

I suppose it depends on the horse but they really aren't built for jumping, I think I'd be looking elsewhere at something like a Dales or a Fell. That said I was looking for an ID when I bought Daisy, you'll find that the right horse finds you

I'm actually 5'8 not 5'9 but i have long legs. Fjords are definitely good weight carriers and by what I've seen plenty are actually wider than ours so would take up your leg better.

Badger has very nice paces and would do a lovely dressage test (we're hoping mum can do a W/T test soon although she has memory/confussion problems so we will see how she gets on at home running through a test). Badger seems so far intelligent and easily trainable while being calm and fun. The first time he jumped he picked it up very quickly and by the end of the session had popped a 2' jump nicely (where as my WB who has done it twice and is still trying to work out how to co-ordinate four legs!).

He can be a little cheeky and i would imagine he could become a little bargy if allowed. Other than that he is a very easy straight forward pony.

He's not lazy so has a nice natural forward pace so needs very little leg and is also responsive to the hand (he's in a snaffle and even when he was spooking at the sheep yesterday i didn't feel out of control at any point).

So really if they are all like him then they are a lovely breed (our instructor also has one for her daughter and she is the same).

As a part of the "Norwegian Championship in Fjord horses" they have to jump 90cm!! Also compete at Elimentary standard dressage and driving!

They are cracking little horses

I ride a Hafllinger and so have some of the similar issues to riding a Fjord - Im 5' 7". The main issues I find are that you need to keep your body fairly upright with jumping ponios if you are a tallish adult as they generally have quite an explosive action behind over jumps and of course theres not much of a neck in front of you, more below you! Lots of mane tho!!!!

I dont see much of a problem in a Fjordie jumping anything up to 3 feet with ease as long as the Fjord involves likes jumping....

Overall I would say a great choice :-))))))
 
I have never known a Fjord who can't jump. They all seem to enjoy it, but be aware that there are two types, the finer riding type and the heavier set driver. Your also best importing one direct if you are really serious, friend of mine brought a really cracking pony over, he cost £600 and to import him was about another £600 (in luxury transporter) he has been schooled to medium dressage and has jumped the foriegn equiv of BSJA. She was sent full DVD from his owners showing him competing and has since imported another one.
This is a couple of pics of fjord mare I had in to sell in the summer, she was quite heavy set but loved to jump! She was very much point and shoot and would fly over anything! FYI the girl riding her is about 5'8" and pony was about 14.1hh

I have met so many fjords over here, and they could all jump a course over 90cm (one was jumping 1.20 courses - but couldn't compete as it didn't have papers!) If someoen offered me one, i'd take it! they are fantastic little 'horses' and have the most perfect character!!
