I have just noted with dismay a vendor on the High Street selling England Flags. Whilst I'm not opposed to people displaying their team colours it fills me with dread every world cup build up when out enjoying a nice hack and a car comes speeding round the bend with a flag flapping wildly in the wind. The sight and sound of these 'monsters' in enough to send any horse mad.

:(

Oh God, it's not that time of the year again is it? AND we have the World Cup this summer to encourage more of the blimin things. Have to say my chap is rather good with them snapping past him, now if they have broken and fallen into the gutter, that is a whole different matter. ;)

Might be time to go buy one and start working on your horse to get used to them.

Horses have to get used to all sorts of things when they are out, and putting in some work now may help for the future.

Unfortunately things like this are a fact of life, and whilst you hope that people will slow down and take care, you can't expect people not to do these things just because a horse does not like them.

There will be flags outsides houses as well to deal with.

I made a big effort to try to desensitise mine a few years ago, and it helps a lot. Put flags up all around the school, and around the yard and even one near his stable door (make sure he can't poke his eye out though!) Honestly, it does do the trick!

If you're a bit worried about people thinking you've lost the plot or trying to make some kind of statement, make your own plain ones by cutting up a sheet and then you'll need to use glue and also stitch them securely onto sticks!

joy

See can desensitise frank all I like at home (flapping plastic/tarps do cause trouble hacking... double deckers and air brakes fine ;) ) but at home nope, wont react at all, have had the bloody thing wrapped in tarpaulin

out and about it tends to be things that arent quite right ... he would have made a good mechanic as is good a spotting dud cars and as far as he is concerned cars dont normally come with flags attached, its the same when locally people dry their swimming costumes out the car window...... doesnt normally happen :D

Yes they are a nightmare. Horse near us spooked at some last world cup and wound up on the bonnet of a landrover. Fortunately horse, rider and driver uninjured.
Yes, a good desensitisation strategy, or keep off the roads until it has all passed.

Totally agree Theresa. People need to take responsibility and work to de-sensitise their horses as they are going to be flapping about whether we like it or not.

They are a pain though, I hate the bloomin things! :D

Noooo. not that time again! I know a lot of big brand stores aren't selling them but as I live in chav land I'm sure the local tourist shops will be full of them, boo

There is a huge difference between a flag or four fluttering gently in the breeze, and two humming furiously as the car goes past you at 40 mph. My horse will tolerate thunder in the distance, but get it closer than 5 miles and she goes to pieces. I'm very glad I'm not out on the roads any more, frankly.

Kai was only 4 when the last world cup was on and she was really scared of the fags, wouldn't go anywhere near.

I sent a lot of time desisitising her, since then she doesn't bat an eye lid at any flags or flapping things out hacking. Did feel like an idiot diving backwards and forwards past her with 2 flags flapping away!!

fatpiggy - just two??
We get people carriers with eight whizzing past at 60mph while out with our neds. Luckily most of ours are completely bombproof (disclaimer; as completely as possible, we know there is no guarantee)

Oh god, don't, I remember it last time, my poor mare had some excessive person with 4 bloody flags on the outside of their car speeding past, thank god we had plenty of room, otherwise it could have been awful.
I am not looking forward to that....

Actually thats a blooming good idea, think I may just do that this soon

Come on people pleeease - you're not now moaning about other people's right to do what thim to do as they want are you? So, your horse may not like it much then I am sorry you need to get some control over your horse. I don't even think about things like this to be perfectly honest, if i am out hacking my horse I expect him to do as he's asked and, if he takes a dislike to anything then so be it, I'm not going to panic or fret because i know I have control and he will do hat i want.

Really, some people stress far t what oo much over what 'may' be - you're probably stressing your horse more than your horse is actually bothered about it. If they can cope with plastic bags in hedges, pigeons flying out of trees etc etc, they should be any worse when it comes to flags on cars!!

If you're REALLY that worries then get desensitising but really any horse that is hacked out regularly should be able to trust its rider and do as its told.

I turned out the pony this morning, which involves crossing a road through the village at rush hour and all was well, as I walked back myself across the road to the yard, a car shot through (it's 30...reckon he was doing 50) with 2 huge red and white flags affixed outside of the car via both back seat windows...he was going so fast they were not only flapping but making a slapping noise as they flicked in the wind and was just SO relieved he hadn't come by when I was waiting to cross the road 5 mins earlier...can't wait for the World Cup as then it will be flags, car horns....

I thought the flags were do do with the election - I'm sure the ones I saw were for the UKIP party. If they are for the world cup I guess they will be going on after May 6th then...
