Horse has an ongoing issue with flaky skin, dandruff across his back and sides. He’s not particularly itchy now he’s not got his winter coat, and his coat is otherwise very shiny, but I wish I could get it sorted.

I’ve tried the FP balancer, plenty of magnesium, yeast: no change. Flaky skin continues regardless of if he’s being supplemented with hay or not and regardless of if he’s receiving a hard feed or not. Judging by the colour of his wee, he’s plenty hydrated. Had this issue since the winter so it's not insect related either.

My gut is telling me it’s a lack of fatty acids but, though he’s currently a healthy weight, I really don’t want to be feeding him any linseed or oil because I know he’ll balloon (very, very good doer).

Ideas? I’ve been thinking Vit E because he’s on pretty poor grazing, but then I would have thought a Vit E deficiency would be associated with a dull coat.

Any topical treatments or shampoos that might work?

One of mine improved dramatically with micronised linseed. You don't need a lot to make a difference so the no. of additional calories is not so much.
