My poor yearling has yet another abscess! He's been prone to them for a while now and he's only a baby!....huge but still a baby!

On the vets advice, he's fed biotin and has done since weaning and has his feet cleaned out every day! He's gone a while being sound but as soon as the wet weather came back...so did the abscess! Well it seems that way!

My farrier can't find this one and thought it might be right in the centre of his bulb....so I've tubed his foot, poulticed it too and he's on bute but still it hasn't burst and he's really lame! Although better on softer ground! Time for the vet maybe?

What else can I do to help him? Hate the thought of him suffering. Thanks.

I can totally sympathise with you on this as I have one prone to abcesses.

In my experience the vet didn't do much more than my farrier but just charged me twice as much!! Obviously I'm not suggesting you don't call the vet if you think yours needs it but I do tend to call my farrier when I know there's one brewing.

Do you disinfect your boys' feet? I have found that regularly using LifeData has made a difference to mine when everything's wet and muddy. I clean her feet, let them dry and then brush LifeData over the hoof wall, sole and frog and leave it to soak for about 2o minutes before turning her back out. I probably do this every 3 or 4 days when it's muddy and once a week if the ground is dry.

This does seem to make a difference and my farrier can always tell when I haven't been doing it regularly.
