Flaming Car driven into Glasgow Airport

Have just seen the pictures on BBC24 obviously taken by mobile phone/digi camera from onlookers.The fireball looked terrifying. Heard a man on five live describe how he brought one of the men down and another said he saw a man pour petrol over the car and himself.
 
Good old Sky, inflaming peoples emotions as much as possible. I used to really enjoy Sky News but refuse to watch it anymore, they really do sensationalise everything, and in cases like these the facts should be presented and thats it until more concrete evidence is known.

I don't get Sky news now as I am on Telepest (now Virgin Media) so now watch BBC24 and it is less frenetic reporting. The witness reports I heard on the radio don't completely match with the reporting on teletext (news junkie me!)

I would rather watch Sky News than the BBC. I don't trust the latter any more due to their obvious political bias. E.g. Palestinian terrorists are called "militants" and the Israelis are always "heavy handed" and portrayed as aggressors.
 
Each to their own - all I know is that I have worked for Reuters and BBC, I have had the same news tickers as Sky have received at the same time and the way they twist and inflame sketchy facts is appalling. Yes, the BBC may well come across as political biased at times, but at least they do not play the same dramatics that Sky do. When the man and woman were arrested in Spain regarding the Madeline McCann case, I had all the information from the Spanish press at my fingertips, Sky managed to dramatise the whole thing into constant news - total and utter nonsense and not at all fair on those actually concerned in the case.
 
My god, it`s so frightening to think that something like that could happen so close to home! My friend is a policeman and was at the scene, hubby has taken him to the pub for a drink. Does anyone know why they have shut down Blackpool Airport? Have they had any security breeches there?
 
Do you think Scotland has been hit because Gordon Brown has taken over?

I think it's true that we have always been complacent up here but that has well and truely been put to bed now. Does anyone know why the news say that Liverpool airport has been closed?
 
Well I was up at Gatwick Airport very late last night, sitting in my car waitting for some one as i was collecting a friend, giggling at all the holiday makers coming back from their hol's in a pair of shorts and t-shirt just to show off their sun tan...LOL

. Any how with yesterday's advent with the car bomb in London this twat parks his car up and off he goes in to the Airport when their are BIG signs saying "DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR HERE AT ANY TIME". Any how the police turn up he comes running out of arrivals shouting that's my car... Police shout at him..about yesterdays advents and the car get's towed away. Some people have no idea....

where is the sensationalim??
 
My little girl went through Glasgow Airport this morning at about 10am en route to her school trip to Mull. Along with about 40 of her classmates and a few teachers. Brings it all a lot closer to home somehow.
 
True weezy but it IS - the guy was pouring petrol all over himself and then whilst covered in flames tried to attack a policeman shouting "Alah" hmmm yeh not terrorists at all. That was reported on BBC1 last night by a witness.
Also country now announced to be in 'critical' and "expecting an imminent terrosist attack" released statement by the government
 
I cant help thinking that this was a copycat attack by someone who lives in the Glasgow area and for whom Glasgow airport was the closest and most obvious target. The type of vehicle and modus operandi (sp??) were different from the London car bombs.
 
I agree. What struck me is how they managed to FAIL to cause a huge explosion with a car, petrol and a light. Surely it's not that hard. It is as well that they did fail but really? Surely anyone with a half-baked inclination towards blowing themselves up could make a proper job of it?
 
ABC News here in the US is saying this morning, that this (as well as the attempted London bombings) was the work of a sleeper cell that was under some level of surveillance prior to these events. The same report also stated that the US had some knowledge that both the Glasgow and Prague airports were being eyed as possible terror targets and had air marshals on incoming flights to both locations for two weeks. I CERTAINLY HOPE AND PRAY that information was shared with the appropriate authorities in the UK and the Czech Republic -- but there was no mention of that in the report.

It's actually quite hard to cause an explosion using petrol. To do it, you have to have a large quantity of petrol as a vapour mixed with the right amount of air (as happened at Buncefield).
If you just set light to liquid petrol, you'll get a fierce fire (which would eventually cause any gas canisters in the car to explode) but you wouldnt get an explosion straight away.

I dont think it has anything to do with the fact that a Scot has taken over. Terrorists dont give a rats about that sort of thing. They're doing it against the UK in general. I personally think they did it in Scotland just to make sure that the WHOLE of the UK know not to assume one part is safer than anywhere else (like the obvious target of London).

We were at a gig right beside Edinburgh Airport on Sat night so we went right past the road to the front of the airport which was closed. Loads of police about. Thought the traffic would have been horrendous but luckily it wasnt!

Im glad in this case that a) nobody was hurt (except hopefully one of the terrorists!) and b) that they were caught alive so hopefully they can get info out of them.

I agree though, if you're going to do a suicide stunt like this then you'd think they would have planned it to have gotten it right?!

FYI, I assume that the intent with the London car bombs was to

either have a massive detonator that would explode the gas cylinders, ignite the petrol, and and spray burning petrol for 100 yards or so, and at the same time fling nails for 300 yards.

or using a smaller detonator ignite the petrol, cause a hot but small fire (in the sense of area) which would progressivly overheat the gas cylinders and make them explode (and fling nails) over a timescale of several minutes (or tens of minutes).
