My mare has cellulitis in her front leg brought about by a puncture wound sustained last week. Vet has been out and she's on antibiotics (which she is being an utter mare about eating!) and danilon. It's only mild so I'm hoping we caught it before it gets nasty.

Anyway, vet said to use Flamozene or sudocreme with Flamozene being the best but expensive option. Now the girl at the yard has some left over from last month which she has given me, however, the tube says to disgard within 7 days of opening! The vet nurse (who keeps a horse at the yard) says that's nonsense and it's a guide for human use...anyone else used the stuff after it's been open for a while? It's not going to cause any damage is it? Also can you buy it over the counter at a pharmacy? I could pick some up from the vet but pharmacy is closer!
 
I've got a load of it, which I keep in a cool place and use whenever I need it. It must be about 18 months old now.
 
Apparently its prescription only, so I was told but don't quote me on it, I have orderd tubs of it before from my vet without an appointment but thats was many years ago, I don't think you can buy it over the counter now, although I was you could many years ago, if your vet has treated your horse anyway then perhaps just give him a ring and see if you can order some?

Its not that expensive if you buy the tub, the tubes won't last you 2 minutes and I wouldnt use it if its already been open for a while, as it won't be sterile as applying a newly tube etc.

Ditto this .... except mine's a bit older. It's still effective and hasn't made any body parts drop off yet :p:D
 
My vet did me a tub (I think it was 500g) for about £30 so not that expensive (the tubes work out a lot more), and it is good stuff, mine has been open for about 6 months and it's still fine!
 
Its fine even if it has been open. It is prescription only and we get great tubs of it from our vet. They're fine from one winter to the next.

Just call me cynical but I think the discard in 7 days thing is more to ensure you have to buy more from the manufacturer than for any other reason!

Thanks guys :) it'll be getting slapped on this evening, if I need more I can get it fromt he vet but the 100ml tube is £27 and the 500ml tub is £50 so I'm hoping ot make do with the stuff my friend got a part of her horse's (insured) treatment :)
 
talk about a coincidence.....I've been hunting high and low for an unopened tube this morning to try and help a patch of dermatitis on my arm.......I got it for the boy, but never used it - should've taken it back and got the money back i guess - oooo I still could I spose.

Is flamazine any good for human skin conditions:confused: Just never tried a silver product on my own skin, tho I know it's prescribed for burns and bed sores. sm x
 
Every summer my horse gets a scabby patch on his neck/wither area, usually coinciding with changing from his posh silver lined lightweight rug into a cheapo flysheet (He has to wear a flysheet as he's hogged, but has a bald patch on his white neck that gets sunburned)
The vet comes out every year and prescribes a dose of antibiotics, and flamazine cream. A different vet came out over the winter for a cracked heel, and offered to give me some flamazine for that, but I already had a big pot left over from 2 years ago, they looked at the use by date and said, don't worry, this will be fine! When the silver is active it is white in colour, when it is deactivated it goes black - I nearly had a heart attack the first time I put it on Splish's neck and it went all black - but that shows it is working.

Silver cream is used extensively in hospitals where people have open wounds, particularly on burns, so it's absolutely fine to put it on yourself, I use it for everything, horse or human!

It's fine to use on humans, I think it's a human product that we are using on animals rather than the other way round! I've heard some rave reviews about how good it is, I'll let you know how much it helps with the baldy scabby infected leg :(
