My connie is absolutely fine to ride in the school - he accepts the contact, doesn't evade, doesn't hang and is overall happy and soft in his mouth. He is also the same when out hacking unless, however, it is a fast hack.

The majority of the time he is fine to control/stop, even on these fast hacks although sometimes he can get a bit excitable and opens his mouth, evades the bit and voila - its 2 fingers up to me!

Would it be acceptable to use a flash when i know it is going to be a fast hack? I know the evasion isn't from pain as he would do it in the school and on all hacks surely? I am very happy to put the work in as i know he shouldn't be doing this. I am also not very keen on changing the bit as he is happy in it at all other times although will consider anything.

Would this help matters? i don't want to just cover up the problem but thought it could help me gain back that control on the rare occasion it isn't there and work from there. Its not a huge problem but needs nipping in the bud as he is only 6.

I would give it a go. I might have to start doing this with my own Connie x ID when we start fast hacking again (maybe it's a Connie thing?)

I use a drop and a martingale when hacking my TB otherwise it can get a bit hair raising if he gets wound up so I would say do whatever works for you :p

wouldn't be surprised if it is!

Mine's an absolute dream in the school and helps give confidence to mum's young green TB on slow hacks (which is why that's mainly all we've been doing)
Took him out for a fast hack with another horse, went into an open field for a canter and he decided it was much more fun to have a bucking bronco session and try to take off. I pretty much had to sit the bucks and let him get it out of his system :D

Am coming to the same realisation with my ISH mare, I recently put her into a hunter noseband which looks very smart on her but when we're in exciting company I notice she's doing the same. I've never been a big fan of the flash, but her old owner thinks it might be wise, not all the time, but in excitable company
