I ride both my horses in a flash. One is a crafty, stubborn gelding who comes up with new and different evasions every time I ride him. I refuse to "bit up" when schooling and I find the flash prevents him opening his mouth excessively to evade the bit. I can fit 2-3 fingers easily under it and the same with his noseband. I don't like having my horses mouths jammed shut, IMO it does not promote relaxation (which is one of the things you try and achieve in Dressage, right?).

My other horse is a green OTTB and when he gets excited, he gets excited he does have a tendancy to open his mouth. Again, neither the flash nor the noseband is done up tight and he goes well in it.

Both can and do get ridden without the flash however they do go better with it on.

Oh and their teeth are done regularly, their gear is all corrently fitted and I am an Equine Bowen Therapist - they get regular treatments. Neither is in pain.
