Can I have some recommendations for flatwork / basic dressage instructors in Essex. I'm based around Shalford, and can't travel so would need an instructor who will travel and who won't look down on my old Welshie and our lack of arena lol!

Would also prefer someone who's goes for a more classical / no gadgets approach, I seem to be having trouble finding someone who fits the bill. Any suggestions much appreciated!

Jenny Belloy is very good based in Writtle not sure how far she travels though.
She has a FB page under Belsmard Dressage :)

Tracey Wright - the difference in my horse since she has been teaching me is amazing. I have also heard good things about Sue Sayward. Both are on FB. Worth speaking to a few and seeing who would suit you best, I always like an instructor who will get on for me if I'm struggling with something, and both these ladies will.

How far from Chigwell are you? My trainer is excellent...has got my horse going so well on the flat. Other trainers had put him in a pelham but now happily he is schooling in a snaffle and going great. Also my riding has improved beyond recognition!

Maxine Kemp - teaches me on my little welsh and has massively improved us. Very classical and lots of in hand work to complement riding. PM me for her number.

Justine Perry, she used to teach me on her horses and has a really nice approach without the use of gadgets. She's a lovely, confidence building instructor. She's under L P Equestrian on Facebook and she's based in Blackmore but does travel.

Thanks again all - I had a lovely lesson with Maxine Kemp at the weekend. It was a real eye opener, and I have so much to learn. She's a great teacher, explains everything really well :) She's rearranged my position , and we did a lot of work in walk and sitting trot (evil!) It's so nice to have an instructor who genuinely wants to do the best for the horse rather than pulling and kicking. Loving the whole classical thing even more - I so want to learn how to do everything properly :) Thinking of getting a book or two on the subject, and also wondering whether pilates will be beneficial?

and also wondering whether pilates will be beneficial?

Dressage instructor Lynn Perry teaches pilates especially for riders. She is based in Stowmarket and teaches at her yard and does visits, I think. She also runs courses (unmounted) near Colchester, so not a million miles from Shalford. (I'm in Braintree). Here's her website:
