flea treatments

what do peope use for their dogs? in the past we have usually used advantage (i think) from the vets and it is quite expensive. i have looked online and you can get it with a prescription, but is the frontline one that you can get from chemists any good? is that suitable for when you flea them for passports? (we have a freind who knows a vet in France and they let you take your own medication)

My vets recommend Advantage now as it does lungworm and mange as well as fleas. Stronghold does mange and fleas. Frontline does fleas. Lots of foxes and slugs/snails around here!
