Our two dogs have been regularly frontlined; we last did them three weeks ago when we noticed fleas!!

So we got the "Nuvan" stuff from the vets, vaccumed up, sprayed the house, did the dogs, washed the bedding etc etc., but now the little blighters are back with a vengeance!!

Several times recently one of the dogs has been sitting next to me and a flea has jumped on me; also I've found them on the dogs coats.

We can't frontline them again so soon; so what to do? I'm at my wits end. The frontline doesn't seem to be keeping them off the dogs at all well.

Any ideas anyone?

Frontline is a complete waste of time, money and effort - my vet told me this!! Frontline Combo is slightly better but we now use Stronghold and haven't have a problem.

You will have to get this from the vet though (well at least you do here) so it is more expensive.

Had the same problem with fleas. My dog vet say they are no longer selling frontline spot-on as they have had so many complaints about it not working. I used Frontline spray this time and its worked. Have to get it from the vets tho so is more expensive - about £30 for 250ml pot

I also use te front line spray (not the spot on's), and I never have flea issues with 10 dogs and 4 cats I also use indorex household spray, dont forget fleas can still jump on for the ride but should die once they have had a little suck:rolleyes: they dont steer clear of a flea treated animal, they still try to hitch a free ride:D

Try using the spray (large bottle) and stronghold spot on, and alternate, also flea collars are crap, but they are good for putting into the hoover:rolleyes:, as will kill any sucked up fleas:D
Garlic capsules are also a good flea deterrant, as in giving them to the dog to eat.

Thanks for the info. Interesting what people are saying about Frontline. We were given Frontline Combo by the vets, but IMO totally blimmin useless as a fart in a gale!

Will ask for the Stronghold in future. Have just rung the vets (receptionist) and have had the usual crap about it taking time etc etc, "Stronghold does work", have to vaccumm up every day - but I don't have the time! Or the energy, coz I've got a back problem anyway and vaccuming is the very worst thing for it.

I'm off to Mole Valley to see what they've got. Perhaps something like a powder I can put down on the carpets. There's gotta be summat that's more good than what I've been given! Its all very well for the vets to say "it takes time" but they're not the ones with the problem of when you sit down next to the dog, a flea jumps on you! They don't give a **** in my opinion. No doubt they're subsidised by the pharma companies that sell the rubbish that doesn't work.

As Cayla has stated the 'INDOREX SPRAY' really does the job when spraying in the house.
I bought my first can from the vets & was charged £19.65 & then went onto this website & found it to be much cheaper.

I boiled washed all the dogs beds & defleaed all 4 dogs.

It is a pain to get rid of the bloody things but you will get there in the end.
I also add garlic in the dogs feed which seems to help too.

XxX

Pop a garlic tablet or dried garlic in their food.;) All my dogs get some everyday and I only have to give them a chemical dosing once a year. They are walked everyday in sheep fields and live as a pack so you'd expect them to pick up fleas all the time and I can honestly say in all the years I've only had 1 flea infestation..so the garlic is obviously doing some good.

Ditto frontline spray...the spot on is a waste of time. Avantage or stronghold spot on are much better.

Weirdly enough, Frontline has always worked for our Goldie but maybe we've just been lucky!! Have to use Stronghold on the GSD as can't risk any flea bites she's severely allergic :(
RIP Fleas spray also works :) for the furniture etc.
I remember a flea jumping on me at work, I had to spray the shop, spray myself and get changed in my car before I went in the house!!

Hmm, thank you everyone. I bumped into a friend yesterday morning - clutching a packet of "Stronghold"; she told me of three other separate cases of people who've been fobbed off with Frontline which has been ineffective. One of these people took the wretched stuff back to the vets saying it was useless! So they do know the problem exists but are still fobbing off their clients with crap stuff!

Now, my little brain is a tad devious, and rummaging through my shed I came across some stuff for Red Mite in chickens. The label said it was basically "diatomaceous earth" and that it was a natural product (which I've found very effective for red mite so know it does work). It said on the label it was ok to use for other stuff like livestock, horses (feather mite??? - anyone tried it??); plus ants, pests, fleas, ticks on dogs etc etc.

So both dogs have been done! The theory apparently is that its basically a sharp sandy stuff which is supposed to penetrate the shell of whatever pest you want to kill and by doing so, de-hydrates the beastie! So perhaps I'll use it in the house as well and see what happens. It won't do any harm and might do a lot of good, and is cheaper!

I rang the blimmin vets and spoke to the receptionist, telling her the frontline I was using was about as useless as a nun in a streetfight, and they were not helpful. I shall go in next week and make a polite but no-nonsense request for Stronghold (coz gotta pick up horse wormer anyway) and will not be fobbed off.

So has anyone else used Diatomaceous Earth? For fleas? For feathermites? In the house? I'd be interested ...........

I am having the same problem with fleas and with 8 cats and 2 dogs it's not fun. We have sprayed the whole house.

Over the past two days one of the cats started to go right off her food and on examining her (she's not a friendly cat) she has clearly got flea dermatitis and is quite scabby - she also felt very hot to the touch.

I took her to the vet this morning and he has put her on antibiotics and steroids. He also gave us a tablet for her that would kill all the fleas on her - he only had one so we have to go back for 7 for the other cats on Monday. He also gave us two of the tablets for the dogs.

Within an hour of giving them to the dogs you could just pick dead fleas of them. Then they sat on my bed and left dead fleas where they sat. This is after treatment with frontline, weekly baths with flea shampoo and also treatment with Bob Martin spray.

I am truly hoping that this will help us get on top of them. It is not fun to sit there with no animals near you and have a flea jump on you.

Ehmm, wots the pill your vet prescribed, called? I think my problem is a common one, and that is encountering the dreaded receptionist syndrome! I think I shall have to make an appointment to see either the vet or the vet nurse direct, and then discuss the problem with them, classic case of monkey -v- organist.

There's quite a lot on various websites re. "natural" stuff - apparently Rosemary leaves boiled up and then use the resultant water; also Fennel & Yellow Dock (dunno what that is, we've got green docks here! - but think this was an american website); also Brewers Yeast tablets, and Garlic tablets. Also sprinkle salt on the carpets and then vaccuum up in the morning. Also Eucalyptus Oil mixed with water and sprayed/brushed through coat. Other things are Citronella, Tea Tree Oil, Neem Oil. Which makes sense, as my boy has sweet itch and I give him Brewers Yeast and use some of these remedies on him too.

Oh and you can put Apple Cider Vinegar (a dessertspoonful) in the dog's drinkign water as this helps deter nasties apparently!

I'm going for the Diatomaceous Earth route at the mo. Apparently there was an "experiment" in America where they put some fleas into a jamjar (OMG where were the animal rights activitists???!!!) with some diatomaceous earth, and within half an hour all the fleas were dead! I need to get some more of the stuff and then do the house.

I will see how it all goes and let the forum know! I'll have the blighters ......!!!!!
