The boys need treating, I’ve just squished a flea I took off Mitch. (Why is it always Friday night?!) I don’t know why but I’m wibbling about giving the little ones Bravecto and frightening myself, despite Bear having had it before. I’ve just registered Bear at the original vets, definitely don’t want to go back to the practice that told us he had an aggressive tumour and was going to die!

We’ve just weighed them, big bad Bear is 26kg, Mitch is just under 20kg and teeny tiny shortar$e Goose is 17kg.

I found that the indorex spray for the house coupled with a weekly wash of Johnson’s flea shampoo worked better than the treatment from the vets.

ETA I was really skeptical about the over the counter Johnson’s shampoo but you could see the fleas dropping off with the bath.

We use advocate as too much lung worm risk around us not to. What do you use to treat for lungworm if you don't use spot ons?

Ooh I might try that. We used to get a pink powder that you mixed with water to make a suspension for washing the dogs in, which did exactly the same.(I think it was banned as an organo-phosphate). I really don't like systemic flea repellents, so a shampoo sounds great.

Seresto collars? My old setter has them for the last 4 years with no issues

They’ll be swimming a lot when I take them out, so I don’t think that’s feasible.

I get chewy tablets they do 3 months

Probably Bravecto, which is either a chewy tablet or a spot on-again, they’ll be swimming, so that won’t be effective.

Nexguard my vets prefer to Bravecto?

No idea, I don’t think I ever got flea treatment from the original vets. Either way, Animed looks cheap, I’ll ask for a prescription as it tends to be about £30 more expensive per tablet at the vet! Animed=£19, was charged over £50 per tablet at the other vet.?

I use Nexgaurd. Never had a problem (7.5kg & 10kg)

Zak and Bear were fine on Bravecto, never any issues, but I’m paranoid with these two, maybe because Goose in particular is so little compared to what I’m used to. Everything has been much slower and more careful with them. Maybe it’s me being over cautious or paranoid! I’ll give the vets a bell in the morning, maybe take them in if they have a spot or take them in on Monday-I’m working from home in the afternoon so I can take them after 4. They’ll want to see Bear, at least, they last saw him when he was castrated at 2. He was 12 last week!

Also though as you k if I didn’t historically treat mine and yes they picked up the odd flea when it was mixy season but we just picked them off and never had an infestation that required treatment. One flea does not a panic make!

True, but a couple of years ago, we had a proper infestation, Bear was on my knee, he’d been treated and I picked off about a dozen fleas that were obviously dying. I took all the beds outside, sprayed everything and the house with RIP Fleas (swapped to Indorex because RIP was making me feel sick!) then had to re-treat. It was crazy. I tend to know when they have them because I get bitten. I’ve had 2 bites, one on the edge of my ear! Our lot are constantly in the house, there are 3 beds in the lounge, plus 2 crates.

I’ve phoned original vet, bother is, it’s a little practice, there are no appointments this week! They want to see Bear, minimum, as they haven’t seen him for a decade. They also mentioned £19 per dog for written prescriptions! We’re £40 in credit, tho.

Edit: Bear has an appointment on Tuesday, pups don’t need to go in.

Nexguard lasts one month, Bravecto lasts 3 months, same active ingredient, I think, so Bravecto far cheaper.

How did Bear get on? Did they assess his lameness/slowing down issues? I know he was actually going in for fleas.
T is in tomorrow it’s time for her to hit the meds. Synoquin made a huge difference but she’s looking a bit short in front again.

That would have upset me-where did it fall from?!

The occasional lameness is conformational, we have to manage as best we can, can’t be fixed, we spoke to the vet years ago when we realised Zak had HD. He has a joint supplement and occasional Rimadyl, plus lead walks if necessary.

I don’t think, looking at him in the woods with the little ones, that he has slowed down! I described him as a feral hyena this week. Proper lunatic. My OH goes down one path with him (because he’s very wild and a terrible example to the pups) and meets me at a junction in the woods. He was way up the path on Tuesday because Bear had disappeared. He’s allowed freedom in the enclosed woods, but not so much in the proper woods.

I noticed too that if I raise my voice, he can hear me, so he’s not completely deaf. He seems a lot happier, coincidentally since we swapped his food. ?

We have my bil’s springer staying next week. I don’t think he’s as lively as our lot, but he loves me cos he stayed with us for his first two weeks and I did the looking after. He sucks my sleeve lots, he’s a bit obsessive.

I haven’t seen or had bites from fleas which makes me wonder if I’ve spent £200 for no reason, but we have 9 months of tablets coming. I’d be mortified if Milo went home with fleas!
