Can anybody recommend any fleeces or jumpers that keep you warm either on their own or under a coat? I mainly just wear hoodys but only have a couple left after a clear out!

No specific ones to recommend but I find that anything made out of that very soft, fluffy fleecy stuff (think it's sometomes called teddybear fleece) is very warm - it actually seems to heat you up as well as retaining heat.

But it's awful at collecting shavings bits of hay etc.

I love my EWM jumpers, just the basic round neck, plain ones- they kept me really warm last winter. Plus they don't seem to collect hay/shavings etc like fleeces do.
I think the key to staying a sensible temperature in the winter months is layering!! :)

I wear base layer thermals. A long sleeve top then a micro fleece with a jumper on top. Then my winter coat on top.

One top/fleece/jumper in particular wont keep you warm. It's the layers that do it.

I like more thin layers than thicker ones as you end up looking like the Michelan man.

No particular brands to recommend but I brought my fleeces from decathlon and yeomans. They are designed for walkers and were about £7. I layer up with a gillet or short ski jacket.

For layering, Colombia, North Face, HH, Musto - any name that specifically caters to outdoor pursuits.

Layers keep me warm rather than individual items. I feel the cold so what keeps me warm in the depths of winter: Vest top, long sleeved tee, hoodie, gillet and then a ski jacket. My body protector fits under my hoodie for riding. And then I wear tights and thermal socks and then my thermal boots. As I said, I feel the cold! Apparantly as long as you keep your feet, hands and head warm you'll be fine!

Try these:

www.equafleece.co.uk

They've got a lovely "endurance" top which comes down over your bottie and will keep you lovely and warm! But it leaves plenty of space in the pommel area, especially good if you're doing faster work and don't want anything bulky "down there".

Well worth a look, for dogs and horses too! I will unashamedly recommend them, particularly as their customer service is so good.

Thanks everyone :) I do layer with thermals but wanted something that was actually for cold weather rather than my hoodies! Had a browse on the internet and there are a few sales on brands like musto so may get one from them! :)

RAB is the brand which all my climbing/ hiking/ sailing friends really rate for wind proof fleeces... Quite expensive though, but also stylish.

does it have to be a fleece? I'm going to get a cheap skiing jacket from TK Maxx, I got skiing trousers there as an alternative to waterproofs and they were my best purchase ever, so going to go for a jacket this year, as it will be warm and waterproof and perfect if/when it snows!
