Was poo-picking this morning (as you do) and noticed poor Toby had little flecks of blood down the back of his legs, couldn't see anything obvious so got a headcollar on him for further investigation....and all around his bits he was being eaten alive! Lumps, bumps and little swollen bits....poor boy!

So took up to the stable and washed him all down with some anti-bacterial wash, and gave him something to munch on...within just a few minutes he looked much happier then we smeared fly gel all over his bits, top of his back legs and belly.

An hour later, he was fly-free and munching in his paddock and the lumps had about gone :D

He didn't have any on him anywhere else, no signs of cuts etc and we searched thoroughly. The other horses were fine, and they have their usual spray on them like Toby does...

Rotten things.... :(

They are just evil aren't they, everything on the yard seems to be bothered by them at the mo. One of ours is coated in that itch stop 7 day stuff and the other has an uddercover on, only things that seem to keep them at bay. One of the poor souls on the yard was so badly affected by them that the vet was called as his sheath had swollen up so much from the bites - ouch!!

Poor mite!

Last year I noticed a cluster of flies on my boys sheath. swatted them away and found a hole that after cleaning i could fit the tip of my little finger in that was about 1cm deep! I nearly fell through the floor with shock seeing the damage flies could do! I thought Id found a new species!!!

Yes I usually slather udder cream or any other non stinging etc vaseline etc to keep them flies sticky and off! Sudocreme is nice and tacky...although it can smart a bit(even if it was designed for eczema etc).

Yep, evil! Who the heck invented them....? Well, I know maggots were invented to help eat rotten meat and the like but do we have to have the flies after??

New species indeed! I got bitten by the bleeders as well.....yuck yuck yuck!

Udder cream is a good idea, will have to get some of that, the amount of stuff I use on 5 horses costs a fortune, and udder cream is a decent price to use in copious amounts. Well, it used to be years ago... :D

My native cross is SO thick skinned that more delicate area of his is the only hope the flies have to get a meal :D I have the same, pin pricks of blood down the back legs, I just then usually give his bits a sponge down in case it's sweat/dirt drawing the flies in :)

After shopping at bramham yesterday I smothered all of ours in itchgon cream and then liberally sprayed fly repellant on them. Mine is so itchy he lifts his leg like a dog if you scratch his belly atm  :(
