Flies or Mud

I would much rather have mud! It can be hosed of or brushed off and doesn't affect my boy where as flies drive him up the wall!

If it not flies in the summer then its mud in the winter, which would you rather have?

that's actually a really difficult one! last year we had more mud that we've ever had, I couldn't get the wheel barrow in and out of the field, literally spent 20 mins one day pulling it through an area that was only about 20 foot :(

but then in the last few weeks we had so many flies, more than I've ever seen! was as if there was a dead body or sumit! it was disgusting!!

so I don't know what i'd prefer!!

I only got back into horses at the end of Jan this year and the mud was a real problem I have a scabby feathered cob, but I've been so worried about the flies with my girls sarcoid this summer, funnily though its disappeared, so maybe was not a sarcoid?

But I'm not looking forward to the mud :(

Flies definitely. We're already back in winter mode here today - torrential rain and gale force winds. Entrances to the fields are boggy - bring back the hot weather and flies PLEASE!!

this!

i was just thinking today with the wind and the rain barely into the 2cns week of September; well that's it now. no more sun on their backs and its mud, mud, mud until next April.
Flies aren't pleasant but they can be managed and its only really bad for 2 months of the year, whereas mud with all the joys it entails of soggy, chapped fetlocks, rampant mudfever, living in wellies, impassible gateways and hock deep boggy bridle paths, starts about now and goes on for the next 6 months.

Do you really need to give much thought to which you'd rather have?!

Well you would think its a no brainier but the herd are much happier today in the gale and no flies, yesterday they were going mad with the flies - so which does a horse prefer might be a good alternative question. For my lot they prefer autumn and spring to summer or winter i reckon!

I loved this summer, now gone :( but couldn't stand the flies, it was out of this world and everywhere. Worse in the stables but also in the garden. So, with no flies right now I prefer mud and as pony is in retirement this winter we won't have to fight the mud in the fields like last year!
