A friend moved her horse to a new yard in the spring, and has found that this summer he has been very badly affected with flies, especially horseflies, making him virtually un-rideable as he is so distressed. Are the flies particularly bad for everybody this year, or is it more likely to be due to the location of the yard?

We've got it much worse, but last summer we were on a windy hilltop in Scotland, and this summer we're on a flat bit of Yorkshire, so I suppose it was inevitable!

It could be due to the location, the yard my horse is at seems to have loads more horse flies then my friends yard 10 miles away!

get some good fly spray like coopers or tri tec14, and a couple of fly tags plaited into the mane. fly rug if horse is distressed. some areas are very bad, and yes it varies from location to location.

Hogged cob so fly tags not an option! Already wearing fly rug with neck and full mask. Also allergic to most products (a sensitive chap!) so have to be careful what we put on him in the way of sprays etc.

I think this year has been horrendous for flies!
Quite a few times iv had to cut rides short because my mare is just going mad.
Never thought I'd say it but roll on autumn and winter dry cold days :)
