I have a 31 year old mare who I’ve owned for 23 years so not new to this problem but OMG I have never known it be so bad for flies. Not horse flies just normal blue bottle type flies. My trusted home made concoction of skin so soft, tea tree & citronella oil isn’t working. I’ve bought Power Phaser and that doesn’t seem to be helping, she had a fly rug on but I’ve taken it off as they were all underneath it and driving her even more mad.

This morning her entire body was just a mass of flies, she still has a face mask on and that’s working well at stopping them round her eyes but has anyone got any miracle cures for keeping the pesky things away from the rest of her?

I’ve resorted to neat citronella on her tail hair (not near the skin) and some drops on her rain sheet today along with power phaser and home made concoctions elsewhere but whilst she was better when I left there were still flies on her.

Hoping someone has the miracle cure they are willing to share ……

I have found glue traps/sticky paper to work well.
My glue trap is horsefly glue spread on an overturned black bucket and it gets lots of regular flies. I only have the small strips of sticky paper that I use for the house but I have seen some for stables and apparently they work well. I also have a reusable net trap for flies which is good but you need to top up the cup regularly (I use cola as bait which doesn't attract bees).
I also have a bottle of power phaser which does nothing for my horse as the flies and horseflies still land on her while I am spraying it and after.

That's interesting - I've also found that blue bottles are horrible this year. When I go to bring my horse in he has two dozen of them parked on his back and another dozen on his bum, just sunning themselves. Must be really annoying for him! He doesn't actually seem overly bothered though, a good layer of mud / loose dirt / general filth seems to help protect him

Mine have been treated with the sheeps Zoetis Spot On liquid a couple of times this year. So far the flies seem under control, around but not a real problem.

That’s exactly what she was like this morning- she just had a layer of flies all over her. She wasn’t too distressed by them but was shaking her head and stamping her feet from time to time. I’ve never ever known them be this bad before.

I use a homemade fly spray made up of half blue Listerine and half Dettol. It seems to work better than other fly sprays that I have used. The only bad thing about it is that it does smell weird compared to citronella fly spray. Hope this helps your problem.

I spray the homemade fly spray over the zebra fly rug that my horse has.
