Flies

I have has success with Leovet Phaser, i use the roll on on her face and it does noticeably keep them away. Same with the spray, she has a rug on but i spray it on the bits it doesnt cover, especially her legs. It doesnt last 24 hours so i put it on morning and evening but so far its doing ok. Like everyone else, i've not known them this bad, i'm on my 3rd bottle this summer and will probably need another!

It doesn't work for us. ☹️ Also, its nasty stuff. Don't know what's in it, but it sets my asthma off if I accidentally breathe it in.

Phaser is high in DEET, which is also used in human anti mozz sprays but is definitely nasty stuff.
I tried Leovet Phaser in desperation a couple of years ago despite my dislike of using DEET products…and the blimmin flies just didn’t care! It had exactly the same effect as all the other citradiol baed ones, ie only very temporary. And most of the flies are on his legs or face - a fly mask is fine for the face, but the legs are just bitten relentlessly :(

I feel like I'm taking hours off my life when I accidentally breathe in power phaser but I had to switch back to it. I'd been using the biteback superfly last year which just wasn't cutting it this time. Tried "all natural" goodbye flies and might as well have used sugar syrup (though it did make her very shiny!).

Given my last post it obviously isn't 100% effective as she was DOUSED in it last night (a combo of biteback sweet relief and phaser) but when we got home to the yard I did see some black flies not finding anywhere to land and pissing off again so I guess it deters some.

I'm looking at ride on fly rugs and thinking about fly boots, I see American horses in little lightweight tubes on their lower legs which look interesting but when I try and google them the only results are temu and shein 😂 UK fly boots seem much heaver, like turnout boots and I don't want those over feathers in hot weather cooking her tendons.

Its definitely not the nicest stuff about, thats why i had to get the roll on as i had to spray it on my hands to put it on her face and it takes proper scrubbing to get the smell off! I've heard good things about Horse Leads fly Mac but not used it myself. All there other products are have been good for me but i'll stick to the phaser stuff for the moment as dont want to try something that doesnt work while they are so bad.

I use the Power Phazer gel, my mare cannot stand being sprayed with fly spray, coat sheen etc are fine but any brand of fly spray and she’s all over the place.

I used deosect on mine yesterday as they came in with a load of bot fly eggs, couldn’t find my block but found my bit knife which I find pretty ineffective.

It caused mine to blister and get welts - never using it again

Horse flies haven’t been too bad this year for us, but the normal flies are awful. So many and nothing seems to do the job for them!
Hoping not to see any bots. I had some eggs on my boy last year but that was the first time I’d seen any in about 10 years

I have one with sweet-itch and use the Biteback spray lotion on him. I've noticed when I go up in the early evening and the black flies are swarming, once I've coated his legs and belly in it (rest is rugged) they all bugger off! It forms like a film on the coat and they don't like landing on it I think, but whatever it is they definitely seem to steer clear. He will be tail swishing and stamping like crazy, then go to being completely unbothered. It's also quite gentle stuff, DEET free, just patch-test first to make sure they don't have a reaction to Benzyl Benzoat as some can be mildly allergic to it.

Neem product helping a bit, but it does smell.......
I also found some stinky stuff, so gonna make some of that up and see if it helps

Yes, black flies just dreadful here, have tried all my various sprays, nothing works long. I have a youngster who's covered , but I don't want to put a fly mask on him, I just know he'll get caught on something 🙄

Any ideas on something to feed to keep flies off, (not garlic)
I’m the same. My two year old is mask free too. I’ve tried so many different fly sprays but none of them work for more than about 15 mins.
