Have had a few sharers for my cob mare now but they all seem to disappear after a while! Just wondering if anyone else has this trouble or if i'm doing something wrong? The last person i have just had has landed me in the poo as she's been coming all through summer when it's hot but now winter is approaching she off and left me in the poo without anyone! tut! I dont ask for much money, it's at our own pad so not lots of kids, my mares an absolute gem! My only guess is they don't like the hard work and get fed up as it's people that have never owned horses before! Ok, rant over!! Sorry!!
 
I can sympathise with you. After 6 different sharers over the last few years I've finally given up on the whole idea! I had one excellent sharer for 2 years then she left to work at La Cense in France. Since then I've had some right gooners so I now think its not worth the hassle!! If I need help I pay for a professional to look after Maggie when I'm away etc.
 
Agreed. I've had nothing but grief with them. Basically they're after a free ride and when it comes to doing any hard work they evaporate. Also, I've heard horror stories from friends:
One girl galloped my friend's horse all over the place, hosed her down and stuck her back in her stable then buggered off to her boyfriend's while one of the other liveries sat up with her because she had colic.
Or another one who let her entire family ride the horse while the owner was on holiday - including children, boyfriend, auntie...
The odd, organised hack out or something is one thing, but yes, let the professionals (with proper insurance!) look after your equine companion.
You wouldn't share your kids, so why share your horse?
 
I've had similar problems over the years. My mare looks like an absolute angel, but can be very difficult. I've always made this clear to anyone who was interested in sharing, but they all start off sure they can handle her. Give it a few weeks and they've had enough - I think they think it'll be like riding at a riding school! She was on loan to a girl who worked in a professional yard a few years back and this girl buggered off on holiday without telling anyone or arranging for someone to care for the horse - I found out and took all the tack away so she HAD to speak to me. We parted company soon after. It's a total minefield and I don't think I'd go down the sharer road again. Having said that, she is out on loan at present, but is at the same yard I keep my other horse so I keep a good eye on her and the woman who loans her.
 
Thank god its not just me! I was beginning to think i was doing something wrong! I've had about 5 different sharers since about Feb time (3 adults and 2 13yo's). Absolute nightmare! I agree that they just want a free ride and then bugger off back home again. They try and pay as little as poss and do as little work as poss. Sorry for the rant!!
 
You know I like to be different....well I've only had one sharer...and she was absolutely brilliant. It was while I was at uni...and my TB mare was about 5/6 yo at the time, basically I paid for the livery and the sharer did the horse care bits...
She became genuinely fond of my mare, looked after her beautifully, cleaned and cared for my tack and equipment, and bought some little things for my horse herself (although she didn't have a lot of money).
She'd phone me periodically to tell me what she'd been doing or if horse had been naughty or whatever...but never moaned.
Maybe I'm just scarey!

i had a few sharers, and my policy is to make sure that they have commitment first even before i let them ride. So i get alot people interested, then not bother to turn up etc.... but once passed my tests, visit yard a few times, groom, do a bit of little stable work etc... it sorts the wheat out from the chaff.
And my current one is brilliant she really looks after my horses as if they were her own and i don't as for money i ask for time, which to me is more important.
But at start i defo act as grumpy, strict cow who takes no sh!t

Please don't tar us with the same brush Horsey_Gal!!! There are some good sharers out there...
I've recently started sharing Bobby and always do stable jobs (for Bobby and owners other horse) when I go up. Am still up there 2/3 times a week although can't ride at the moment as Bobby has lameness problems but I still go and see him and help where I can.
I don't pay anything for sharing him but do buy him treats and make sure I do my fair share of work for both of the horses.
 
Must agree with Bobbysgal, iv had a few, sharers which have worked out and gromn onto own horses or circumstances changed (also mine) but now have a fab sharer who rides twice a week and is always happy to help out with other 2 horses too......yes two extras!!! She is fab!!
 
I had a nightmare loanee (?!) The girls whose horse I shared was a nutter! She ended turning up to my house utterly pole-axed and threw up in my downstairs loo and my upstairs loo (having driven to my house far too drunk!) and that was just the beginning!

When I told her I was getting my own horse she told the YO all sorts of lies including that I stole off her! I just took some of my stuff back that I had bought and needed for new horse which I don't feel is unreasonable!

So really it cuts both ways!!
 
I was thinking it was me too as I've had the same experiences. I've had 5 sharers in total and only one didnt get bored after a short time and disappear on some lame excuse. This was after me going over with them at the beginnign that I really wanted to avoid someone who would do it for a few months and then get fed up. The one who was good was a really committed teenage girl who got more committed as time went on - I eventually sold that horse to her! I only want people to ride twice a week and pay the cost of shoeing! My horse is really easy and well schooled and is on full livery! When it works out its a great arrangment, but in my experience that is very rare, people just dont look after things that are not their own but they are so difficult to spot at the beginning! They just tell you what you want to hear and its very dissappointing.

No real nightmare stories but I've had people supposed to come up on certain days not bother and not tell me so my horse hasnt been fed. Its a complete nuisance introducing someone to yoru horse, showing them where everything is, spending time with them, only for them to **gger off after 2 or 3 months once the novelty has worn off.
 
Totally agree!

Sorry i just wanted a rant! I'm sure there are some very good sharers out there (just not the ones i've had!!) Sorry to those i may of offended.
 
oi im a sharer and i love that horse to bits!

i know what you mean though about people who want a free ride, the thing is with me though is that eventually i would like a horse of my own so im all up for doing all the dirty work - get me used to it!

i used to ride frankie 4/5 times a week, groom, feed turn out etc and would ring the owner up whenever he had a problem, like a loose shoe or whatever. i have lessons on him, because i genuinely want him to do well and build all the correct muscles etc (not just after a free ride, hacking and bombing around the country) i treat him as if he were mine.

however at the moment he has a bck problem and the owner hasnt rang me back once to tell me how he is. i miss him
