I am currently on flu yearly as mine are not yet competing much, but when baby horse starts he will be on 6 monthly flu.

You don't want to be doing tet as much as, if you do it too often, it is likely to give reactions. I do that bi-annually.

I discussed this with my vet last week. I've returned to annual vaccinations but I don't go out much these days anyway. Apparently equine flu cases are extremely low at the moment and BD, BE, BS etc are reviewing their policies. If I remember correctly only one of them plans to continue to insist upon 6 monthly vaccines but I can't remember which one it was.

I've returned to annual as we're not competing affiliaed at the moment. Mine had a reaction to the flu jab last year, he had a massive swelling that took two weeks to go down so I don't want to have to do it more than I need to.

My plan is to go un affiliated hunter trialling and possibly some dressage this year so I will do 6 monthly Incase anywhere I go required that. Thankyou all. The old retired one will stay yearly with his autumn Cushings test. Thanks

Although I just hack and rarely come in to contact with other horses I will continue with 6 monthly as despite not coming in to contact with other horses my one got a really bad dose of flue. Unfortunately the flu vaccine in horses provides a very low immunity after 6 months.

Please can you provide the reports you have gleaned this information from.

I don't have any reports but my vet told me a couple of years ago that the efficacy started to decrease markedly by 8 months, so advised that if we were out and about then 6 monthly ish was a good idea, whatever the various rules were.

However, there isn't a linked scientific peer approved report to prove this.

I do flu ever 6 months and tet at 2 years. I have actually never been asked about the vaccine status of my horses at any competition, which I believe is peculiar to our discipline, and frankly it baffles me.

They ask for proof at the shows near us when you check in. These events are held at big equestrian colleges, livery yards or country shows.

My vet compared it to the Covid vaccine. The 6 monthly vaccination provides protection to un-vaccinated horses i.e. after 6 months a vaccinated horse may carry flu to an un-vaccinated horse but the vaccinated horse may never show any symptoms.

No flu, tet every 3 years for oldie, probably yearly for younger one (she's had one jab so far as haven't had her a year yet, pretty sure that was her first ever one). We don't really go anywhere and horses are kept at home.

I'm sticking to 6 months for the time being because I compete and don't want the worry or hassle of some places/ disciplines still wanting 6 months. If I have 6 months I know I'm good to go anywhere.
