I have just got a new horse, and started his course of flu and tetanus vaccinations on 11th June. However, I forgot to ask the vet when his 2nd vaccination is due. Does anyone know when this would be due.

2nd should be between 21 and 92 days after the first i think! Google riding club vaccination rules.

So lad you posted this! Just remembered mine need doing!

from my reminder card it says:

(FLU)

1st dose
2nd dose 21 -92 days after
3rd dose 150 - 215 days after 2nd dose
Booster every year

BUT... you had flu and tet 'together' so not sure how the dates alter or if they just go by the flu.....ring them :-)

The dates on Lucyfer's reminder card are correct. The second tetanus jab is due 4 weeks after the first one, so you may as well get the second flu done with it (2nd flu being due 3 weeks to 3 months after the first).

Flu booster's are due every year (careful not to go over by even one day if you intend to compete, or you'll have to start again!) and tetanus boosters are due every 2 years.

I'm sure your vet won't mind you phoning to ask if you want to hear it straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak!

That's what I have always done / always been told.

ANd then after the 6 month jab it goes to yearly for flu and 2yearly for tet.

Or am I completely wrong

I thought that if you have flu aswell (and not just tet on its own) then both need to be done yearly? If you just have tet without flu then its every 2 years!?

Oooh is that a treeless saddle I see Flo?

Oh that's ok then - I'm glad that my vets haven't been ripping me off over that one!!!

They just rip me off with every other bloody thing!!!

Yes Lucyfer - it is a treeless - very comfy it is too! But my girly now has got a grown up dressage saddle!

Third jab should be between 150 and 215 days from the second jab to be within the rules. If you leave it as long as a year as quoted above, you will have to start the course again.

The boosters should be done at least the day before the year is up, never later than that although they can be earlier to fit in with things.

After the initial vaccinations, flu needs to be done yearly, and tetanus every two years. However, different makes of vaccines can have different intervals, and you really need to check with your own vet, it's just a phonecall to get it right
