So, like me, I’m sure lots of you are reading posts on Facebook about an equine flu outbreak.

I have spotted a number of veterinary surgeries posting on their Facebook pages encouraging anyone whose horses have not been vaccinated against Flu in the past six months to have a flu “top up”.

I’m wondering, is this necessary? If your horse is vaccinated against flu annually, why is there a need to vaccinate a second time?

I’m not a vet so it would be great if someone in the veterinary field could explain why we would do this and why our currrnt flu vaccines might be ineffective

(Ps I understand that there are different flu strains... as is the case with human flu, but surely that’s the case all the time? Or does current vaccine protect against this particular strain?)
